in dire need of computer help!!

my internet won't work...well, its working now, but i'll have it hooked to my modem, and it won't work, but my roommates computer will work

i'll hook to my neighbor's wireless...and it won't work
but my roommate's computer works

and i rely on my computer for work...i have to email case reports everyday

any idea what it could be?

i did an ipcong, and i get IP addresses, and i can ping into the gateway, but i can't ping into any sites

and honestly, i have no idea why the internet is working now but i'm gonna take advantage of it

HELP!

hmm i've had that problem too, just w/ one computer on my network workin and the other not workin on the same setup. i had to restart everything, network, comp, and reset it all.

another time i had to replace my ethernet card. sometimes its just random 'static and fuzz' that can mess w/ one person's comp and not another.

I'm having the same problem right now! I can get on AIM but I can't check my mail at yahoo or anything. However, my roommates computer is working perfectly fine!

Charter internet if that means anything.

If you can get on AIM but can't surf the internet, it's likely a software issue rather than hardware. May be some sort of virus. Either that or like someone said the network card is fried and is only letting data through certain ports???

Kind of a weird issue...

Did you recently update Internet Explorer or any internet security software. Typically people bring me computers with your particular problem and it is usuallly after a upgrade or download. When this happens the new update reconfigures your settings and can prevent you from surfing the internet

Typically spywear does not actively cause problems directly. Typically you will just see the computer slowing down as the amount of spyware rises and consumes memory capacity. I have had people bring me computers that have no anti spyware programs and find that they have over 300 spyware programs running consuming over 60% of the memory. This will slow a computer to a crawl.

Now I did say typically. There is a couple of spyware programs like Alexia that are fairly powerful and can be manipulated to be destructive by unscrupulous individuals.

Have you had lightning recently where you live???? Lightning can severely damage internal modems and ethernet cards. It does not have to strike them. The EMP from a close lightning strike can kill them or cause a decay in performance.

dial up is useless anyway... did you install the drivers for the modem? or did windows do it? there are two plug ins on a modem, make sure yours is in the correct one.

set it so you can listen to the dial tone, you may not be getting one.

how do you connect with something like..... aol.... or with another better provider?
