I cant MOD my car!!

I was just thinking, what if car companies made cars where you cant take anything apart or couldnt modify anything on it. What if it was againest the law! That is such a scary thought.

Well, parts of that are just about true now. If you live in cali, it is almost completely true. And I Think in almost all states, it is technically against the law to take your stock mid pipe off unless the cats have stopped working as it is illegal to remove properly functioning cats from a vehicle. Granted, that is nothing a screw driver can't fix, but it is true none the less.

Anything that doesn't have a carb approval number = illegal. A number of BBK CAI kits are no no's. The cali peeps can probably chime in a little better, but, modding a car in cali is tricky work. Lots of little gotchas here and there from what I know.

I don't remember, but one of my friends used to get exchange students all the time (always girls ) and she said that they weren't allowed to legally do anything to their cars. She was from Slovakia or somewhere thereabouts.

which is why i'm glad i live in louisiana......they dont give a **** around here.

i had a friend in high school who bought a late 80s toyota pickup for $500. he put a glasspack muffler on the truck b/c i had one on my truck (95 s-10 4cyl 5-speed) and he liked the way mine sounded. well it wasnt loud enough for him. he decided to cut the muffler off completely. still wasnt loud enough for him so he cut the ENTIRE EXHAUST OFF......yes off, he cut it off, he cut it the **** off......from the cats all the way back.

he drove it regularly until it finally died on him, which wasnt very long after his "custom" exhaust mod

that damn thing was LOUD

welcome to cali.

if there is no CARB(cali area resource board) number on the mod, it is ILLEGAL. so basically ill tell you what i have thats illegal in their mind

intake filter(even though its a K&N, its still illegal, since its for a GST and not a SPyder gst)
Greddy BOV
Hard IC pipes
Front Mount
Aftermarket Turbo
boost controller
louder than stock muffler
cat delete pipe
downpipe(not here yet, but its coming)
a-pillar gauges(not illegal, but could be used against you for driving distraction/obstruction of view)
bigger injectors(though if tuned right, nobody is the wiser)

basically when i get smogged, ill have to return all the engine bay to looking as stock as possible(stock intake piping, bov, side mount IC) and hope they dont notice the turbo, which from what i hear, takes someone who really knows dsm's or turbos to know the difference.

its hard to modify a car in cali, but you have to be smart about it. i really should have my fmic covered with some sort of black mesh as not to give it away, but it looks just so dam hawt sitting there.

give it 10 years, federal emissions standards will catch up to cali standards, and everyone will be screwed. even though its been tested most modified modern cars give off the same(if not less) pollution than their stock counterparts.

Unless car enthusiests stand up for themselves and start making some noise then the government is going to keep on cutting back on our rights.

then again taking off cats on a v6 is bad to begin with. a guy here has a nice x-pipe and flowmaster system on his '05 and it just sounds mean. unfortunately it gave him a high idle of 1000rpm.

In Norway you can mod your car, but you got to pay a tax on each HP gain you got over stock numbers (if you want to do it legally). And yes they dyno the car before you get plates on it.
