Now if GM would get their cams out of their blocks and build a more modern OHC V8 they might have sold more Camaros and Firebirds.

Chevy Camaro Concept Slated for '06 Detroit Show, '09 Debut

DETROIT — Chevrolet plans to take the wraps off a concept Camaro at the 2006 Detroit auto show in January.

Also, Inside Line has learned the automaker is evaluating proposals to revive the classic performance-car nameplate in 2009-2010 on a new low-cost rear-wheel-drive platform.

Among the scenarios under discussion inside General Motors is the development of a lower-cost version of the Sigma rear-drive platform that underpins the Cadillac CTS and STS sedans. Another proposal would take the new rear-drive platform that's being developed in Australia for the next-generation Holden Commodore sedan and spin off a low-cost variant for North America.

GM planners are said to have targeted several body styles for the Chevy and Pontiac brands on a new rear-drive platform, including a sport sedan, a sporty coupe and a convertible. The Camaro and GTO badges could be used on those vehicles, according to company sources.

Across town, Chrysler is said to be preparing a concept Dodge Challenger for the '06 Detroit show, to test the market for a proposed two-door performance car it wants to introduce around 2008-2009 as a potential competitor to the Ford Mustang.

What this means to you: Guess it was just a matter of time and environmental awareness — the original definition of muscle cars doesn't fit well with new perceptions of what's best for the world...could there be a "green" muscle car in our future?

Why bother? The pushrod motors in the F-Bodies beat their Mustang counterparts from 1987-2002.

Rick come on you dont really believe that do you. Hell the LS1 and LS2 are absolutely bad *** engines far exceeding the capabilities of the 4.6 or the 5.4 N/A. The fact is the Camaro and Firebird were dropped because they lost the young buyers. The base buyer was middle aged. The car was to dated for young people. The style was dated. The interior was dated. It had nothing to do with the engine. Camaro and Firebird together sold less than half the amount of Mustangs each year. The factory the F body was built in was also slated to close. So it was a styling and image issue that caused the low sales not the engine. Hell if it had not been for the styling I would still be in Camaro's but I might jump to the SRT-8 Charger who knows!!!

WOW. Got to drive it a little bit tonight, man, was that fun. Although I didn't like how the seat sits in the car and the steep slope of the windshield and the long nose, the powa made me forget all about it. God lord, that was fun!

werd. maybe a redesigned LS1 that makes more power than it does now and is even easier to mod.

Re: So I went to the dark side....

dont run the bottle... go with a blower... costs more I konw... just save up for it. The mustang has alwasy been better than the camaro/firebird.... dont mean in performance or looks... that can be debated. Im just talking about popularity... we need to just not call those fuglies they made back in the 70s mustangs (I so said 70s).

Re: So I went to the dark side....

power matters not if they dont make GM a profit... the reason the mustang does not go faster and have more power as it doesnt need to... they sell em as it is, why upgrade something that stomps the competition? Ford isnt one to spend money unless it has to.

That makes no reason at all They made the 03 Cobra to stomp the Last of the SS Camaros and to brag about it. Hell it worked after 20 years of being behind the camaro just about every year, Mustang owners are making up for it big time. Some 03/04 Cobra owners are almost as bad as damn Neon SRT-4 owners BY GOD.

Re: So I went to the dark side....

the problem is that the LS series engines wre basically maxed out for a factory engine. 400hp out of a 346ci engine that still meets emissions and has respectable gas mileage? The LS2/6 are the end of that motor.

Why do you think GM stepped it up to a 427 in the LS7? They can't make more power out of a 346 and still meet emissions...and I DOUBT we'll see the 427 in a camaro anytime soon as it'll cost a LOT of money.

That really depends on what they offer if it looks like the last generation mullet wrappers no but if they get their styling guru's heads out of the sand they migh come out with something special. We will have to see

Actually in the mid 70's to the mid 80's the Camaro did very well and the Trans am exploded in sales after smokey and thew bandit. But sales even out as the 90's rolled out and in 94 Mustang started to sell like hot cakes with 98 being one of the hotest years.

Sure the 350 has loads of power, if 350 cu in couldn't outrun 281 cu in, what would the world be coming to, and as someone said, 281 cu. in. can outrun the 350 in the Supercharge 4V Cobras, lol.
