Sgt Friday coming to california

Well, it looks like Sgt. Friday and Pep Streebeck are coming to California. Drag-Net has been put in place to stop all you weirdos that modify your cars. Just another reason I am glad I don't live in Cali.

Quote:
California Crackdown on Modified Cars
$5 million in federal money will fund a Sacramento, California effort to stop drivers in modified cars.

Police in Sacramento, California announced Wednesday that they would use $5 million in federal money to begin cracking down on auto enthusiasts who modify their vehicles. The money will be used to form an undercover "Drag-Net" unit to stop motorists who appear to be driving modified cars.

The concept, which originated in San Diego in 2001, has been spreading throughout the state and generated significant revenue for the California Highway Patrol and local departments. In Santa Fe Springs, for example, twelve officers on Drag-Net duty issued 300 citations and impounded 50 vehicles in just one weekend. Several cities have drag-racing ordinances that allow police to auction off seized cars and keep the profits.

Under Drag-Net, San Diego officers come to train other departments how to look out for what they believe to be tell-tale signs of illegal modification such as window tinting, large spoilers, extra gauges or racing stickers. Police say this gives them probable cause to stop and inspect a vehicle and its engine compartment.

In practice, "excessive exaust noise" tickets are the most common violation. California law does not require police to measure sound levels objectively. Instead, according to the California Highway Patrol, the "citation is based on officer's judgment."

Drivers of stock vehicles that come from the factory with some of the characteristics of modified cars have experienced harassment under this provision. One such motorist complained on an enthusiast website that the Calfiornia Highway Patrol was using these programs to make "driving while Asian" a crime, pointing out that the department's own website has several pages dedicated to Asian involvement in street racing and "vehicle modification."

Those receiving a vehicle modification "fix-it" ticket must visit a California Bureau of Automobile Repair office and pay a $35 fee to have their car inspected. If the car fails, a judge can impose another fine of up to $2000 for failing to meet California emissions requirements.

I just wish they'd drop into the ocean already. Except for our friends over there.

Holy crap. How on earth is profiling cars with tinted windows to be pulled over not profiling?? That's gotta be a violation of privacy. I swear, I'm glad I'm on the other side of the nation from that psycho state and I feel for anyone that actually lives there.

Re: Sgt Friday coming to california

I just can't see how they need $5mil of federal money to do this.

"OK, start profiling people who mod their cars. Look for the, umm, modded ones."
"Here's your five mil!"

I don't see how searching a car for having stickers can be constitutional...I would like to see this go to the SC, see what they say.

Re: Sgt Friday coming to california

yeah you guys have no idea.

though if youre retarded enough to waste 300 on tint thats illegal anyways, you deserve to get pulled over. no license plate in front cause it looks better, then you deserve to get pulled over. super lowered car and annoying loud exhaust and park bench and you deserve to get pulled over.

theyre profiling big time, and its not gonna last long before enough people start to sue. hell if they pulled me over for no reason other than saying "you look like a modified import, can we look under your hood?, youre dam straight im getting a lawyer and going all out. even though i know if i was a cop i would always hunt the ricers and pull them over their first mistake, but now they have the power to just pull you over at will. definate invasion of freedom there.

but theyre only pulling over the cars that look modified. so the moral of the story is to NOT look modified.

though it still isnt gonna last long. i dont think people are even into the racing scene anymore, everyone i knew that used to go to the "streetraces" and mod theyr mad tyte vtecs have all grown up. and even on friday nights, the amount of rice is less than i have ever seen, i remember a time where every other car was a integra, now i barely see them. most the people grew up and are into nicer cars that come decently fast stock(350z, evo/sti, srt4, stangs, fbodies, etc). sure there are still the kiddies that get their brothers hand-me-down crx with a b16 that think its gods gift, only to wrap themselves around a tree. but then again, i just call that survival of the fittest.

Re: Sgt Friday coming to california

^ Agreed

but I think it sucks they'll pull someone over cuz your car looks modified, I mean.. modifying your car is supposed to be like.. "I'm different from everyone else" kinda deal. You wanna stand out, but I can see how the tint, the loud *** exhaust, & such can be a problem there. If they didn't do that but the car was modified in other ways.. I say don't touch em.

Re: Sgt Friday coming to california

I wouldn't stand being pulled over for just looking modified. I would refuse to let them search.

Re: Sgt Friday coming to california

you could but then they call up dispatch and get a warrant and youre screwed anyways.

basically in cali, anything can be used as probable cause for inspections. i could make a illegal turn and they could say its probable cause and get away with it.

though ive heard stories of people getting hood pins with the locks and cops being unable to get into "locked compartments" without the proper warrant(hard to get ones) so they just let it go. i might do that, just get some hood pins just for peace of mind.
