Storing a car

I have a friend that has orders to italy for the next 3 years and am curious about what he would have to do to store it... I know drain the gas, put it on stands and take the wheels off, but what do you do about oil, etc? I guess drain all the fluids and put in some of that stabil stuff?
Any information is appreciated.

Re: Storing a car

You don't have to drain the gas if you use the stabil stuff. It will keep the gas good. I used it when I Would store the car for 6 months through the winter. If you put the car on stands, you also won't have to remove the wheels. It is best to put the car on stands, just make sure you put the stands so that they keep the suspension compressed. Also, disconnect the battery. Oil, leave it be and then before driving it, change it.

I used to also go and start the car up every month or so just to circulate things and make sure they are not seizing up.

Re: Storing a car

the trouble with starting it, is that hes leaving the car at a storage place in gulf port MS, well maybe he can find someone there to crank it every now and then?

Re: Storing a car

It would be best if someone could crank it every so ofted to let it run a little bit. This way the oil can recirculate, the battery can be charged up some, and the gas can get stirred a little. Basically, just keep things loose. It doesn't have to be monthly really, you could probably get away with every 2 or 3 months or so. You could also have it sit the full 3 years, but in that time the oil will probably be completely removed from the engine and there is a risk of things seizing up and such.
