n00b mucisians...

ive been playing guitar on and off for a bit over 6 years now, while im not too great, im able to pick up the guitar, and relearn and progress rather quickly

well, i was talking to my girlfriend on the phone, and she was at her friends house, and he friend was playing guitar, so we got in a discussion about it

well, i hear her friend playing all the typical n00b style songs, single note songs, no chords, other than power chords, and she wasnt very great, i hear a lot of accidental muting of the strings, and the occasional "dammit"

well, my girlfriend brings up to her that i play, and she's all like "well, is he good?", "what songs can he cover", and i flip on her "cover?! what the **** do you mean by cover? do i look like a ***** *** punk band that cant write my own ****?! go back to your ****ing high school guitar class and learn something other than power chords, learn a bar chord and get back to me"

that ended with a hang up

i hate n00bs in the music scene, they learn a little bit, and get arrogant, "i play guitar", you dont play guitar, youre learning guitar, 2 songs and some chords dont make you a musician

Re: n00b mucisians...

thats a little harsh dude... most people i know that play the guitar and are pretty good at it will still cover songs. Yeah they can write their own music, but its still fun to hang out and hear songs everyone knows with a bunch of chicks around and having everyone singing along in a drunken state.

i think you overreacted

i agree in a way with the fact that you should not judge a person's skill by what songs they can play. and yes you were right, there is more than tablatures that makes a person a musician. i think scales/music theory is what makes a musician a musician.

Re: n00b mucisians...

Being able to cover songs is actually a good thing. It is a good way to keep yourself occupied trying to listen and learn the song and works great with the ladies. Covering has served its purpose for me over the years...that's for sure.

The way I look at it. to learn music theory you have to cover some songs of great musicians. its the only way your gonna get it and understand it even better. Im not a guitar player ( I play bass) but a buddy of mine went to get lessons through this guy whos a local but damn good. But he tough my friend all aspects and then gives hima song that goes perfect with whatever that lesson was. Seems to make him a way way better player now after these lessons.

Hes learning through some Tool songs now who my opinion Adam Jones is the next great in guitar

Re: n00b mucisians...

Although he may have over reacted some....I know what tbird is trying to say. There are people in my high school that learn one simple song and then think they are the greatest thing ever. It's fine when someone is not experienced and learns songs...but I hate when people are cocky about their playing...especially when they aren't that good

Re: n00b mucisians...

the reason i exploded, is for the sheer fact that she had no idea what she was talking about, and then rather than saying "what songs can you play", she uses the word cover, a single person doesnt "cover" a song

its the ignorance, arrogance, and stupidity which sets me off, which she showed all three when questioning my skill

sad thing is, all the songs i can play, she wouldnt know what they are, all i heard her play was green day, easy green day

dam dude you just ****ted on 95% of the guitar players out there.

i learnt how to play guitar by starting off easy(green day, blink, etc) then moving on up to the classics (aerosmith, fleetwood mac, all that good stuff). after learning so many different styles and combinations and figuring out what i like, i just make my own music. when i go to parties im the one in the corner just jamming out with myself, people always come up and ask "can you play this, can you play that" and im like "i used to, back when i was learning". some chick asked if i knew sublimes wrong way, i was like "no but i bet its easy" so i dled it right there, played it, and figured it out in about 5 minutes.

i remember back in HS when i knew this guy who (back then) i though was insane at the guitar. he could play "under the bridge" like no other. i remember thats all he could play. now that i can play, i look back and am like "dam i shouldve learnt guitar back then, ida kicked his *** hard".

i wanna "cover" Radar Love by Golden Earring and Tom Petty's Runing Down a Dream if i ever have a band. my dream was to cover "boys of summer" by don henley, but the ****tards called the Ataris did it, but at least they did it right.

Re: n00b mucisians...

i know we all start off small, my first song was Bush-Glycerine, but the point is, she was arrogant as ****, she was told i played for 6 or so years, and then she was like "i played for a semester" acting like she's as good as i am, in 5.5 less years

ask any decent guitarist, or mucisian for that matter, "are you any good?", and most say "im decent", "im alright", "im working on it", or something like that, not "yeah, im good"

learned and learnt are both correct. As much as I hate to disprove one and prove the other.
