some wireless help

my laptop is all wired up for wireless... but I think I need a wireless card... what's a good kind to get? The University of Iowa has a wireless campus, I believe.... so this could come in handy.
Will this work?

http://cgi.ebay.com/NEW-LAPTOP-WIREL...QQcmdZViewItem

if it helps... I have an HP laptop... and is up-to-date with modern stuff... only 2 years old, and was top of the line then, so it's good.

Re: some wireless help

Dont get that that is one ****ty wireless card right there.

You want atleast a 802.11g card

I would pay for a good one because you will get a ****ty quality if the source isnt right next to you with a cheap card.

Re: some wireless help

Werd,

But check the total price on that ebay link with shipping and if it isnt much more or the same as the newegg one buy it from newegg because of a much better warranty and much faster shipping.

Re: some wireless help

What is your main use going to be?

On campus network or Internet browsing.

Lan access would dictate the fastest available card 802.11g
Mostly Internet 802.11b or above will do.

Just stick with a name brand. As with everything you get what you pay for.

Re: some wireless help

if you dont buy the good stuff you may regret it... going cheaper may seem better but may bit you in the butt later on... so think about it.

That is goofy as hell G is not even universal beccause no technology allows for 53 meg wireless transfer at the consumer level. This is from a person who developed G technology currently wireless will run at 2-5 meg tops. And until the ISP's update their techology it wont happen

Re: some wireless help

If your pc is set up for wireless, you won't need a card. There's not much else to do for wireless than have a card.

now does that mean it wouldnt find the network or wouldnt connect to it(meaning you need the network key)?

i have internal wireless card that does any kind of wireless(a,b,g, whatever) and i found networks in my 'hood but they are all secure and need the network key. also sometimes wireless networks dont broadcast their source unless you know it(as in, you have to add the name of the network to your connections to see it). then there are the stupids out there who run open networks and dont care, like the t-mobile booth at our mall. i was able to connect to them but they wanted a subscription to browse the net, but being still connected i loaded ares and used ares as my browser and it worked.

sometimes it helps to be freinds with ITT graduates.

it advertises "free wireless internet"... I don't know why they would mandate a key.

they want you to ask them for it. Maybe they want you to buy something or sign up for something.

UAB has free wireless. If you go to school here.
