New Orleans Levees to be left at old strength

The levees failed, let's rebuild them back to their old strenght and not worry about it for a while. This sounds like a disaster waiting to happen to me. Sounds like a great plan to me though.

Also, based on this story, looks like Bush isn't the one that says no afterall. Gee, what a concept. Although, I am sure they will still find a way to spin it to be Bush's fault. Maybe it is really congress that doesn't like black people...

Col. Lewis Setliff, the engineer overseeing the levee repairs for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (search), said the Corps only has the authority to rebuild levees to the strength they were prior to the storms that damaged them.

Without approval from Congress, the Army engineers cannot build the levees higher and stronger. And even if Congress were to give that approval soon, it would come too late to allow them to be finished by the time the 2006 hurricane season begins in June.

I think it'll be fine as it was for many more years. I can't see the future though, so who knows.

And I did not know that about Congress...
