Any Chemistry People?

It's been awhile for me and my brother ask me for some help. I'm stumped. Any help would be appriciated.

Three Students were asked to find the identity of the metal in a particular sulfate salt. They dissolved a 0.1472-g sample of the salt in water and treated it with excess barium chloride, resulting in the precipitation of barium sulfate. After the precipitate had been filtered and dried, it weighed 0.2327 g.

Each student analyzed the data independently and came to different conclusions. The three answers they got were titanium, gallium, and sodium. What formula did each student assign to the sulfate salt?
Look for information on the sulfates of gallium, sodium, and titanium in this text and reference books such as the CRC Handbook of Chemistry and Physics. What further tests would you suggest to determine which student is most likely correct?

Thanks

Re: Any Chemistry People?

A book is your friend...and I'd help, but the last chemistry I had was in 03...and I really really don't feel like thinking right now.

Last time I took inorganic chem was 4yrs ago. I don't remember any of that crap. I can tell you some organic stuff.

But I do like titanium. I've got it on my car in a few places Choose that one

Re: Any Chemistry People?

dude, I'm a chem major... and I love titanium too. I'm going to assume the book will have a list of some common compounds with those metals in it, and you take the formula weight and use it with the mass you're given to figure up which is should be. The metal is combined with a sulfate, which is why the addition of barium sulfate forces it to precipitate.. so look for which of those makes a compound with sulfate, and then figure up how much it would mass if you took out all of the metal... and compare your numbers.

I'm a Chem minor, but I'm too tired to figure out the answer to that.

That's GenChem stuff I believe, I'm in Organic now.

Re: Any Chemistry People?

Yeah It's GenChem. It's been over a year for me too. The problem arises that neither me or my brother has that book ( He's in HS taking AP Chem and they don't provide books like that) I'll just have to tell him to check out the library or something. Thanks for all your input though.
