what pickup to get?

ok so here's the deal.

the v6 is gonna be swapped with a 5.4 mod motor in the next year or two. i have a connection that can do it for me if i supply the motor to him. (thats the hard part, the 8.8 swap is straight forward so i'll be doing it myself).

so now i need to find a pickup. i want one that i can use to haul the car around with because it's gonna be a track beater when this happens.

i was wanting something with power and hauling capabilities, and practical. ideally some kind of extended cab of sorts.

No new car, pickup is the DD

Re: what pickup to get?

why don't you just buy a cobra you can take to the track and use as a dd?
sounds like a lot of effort to me.

if the trucks sole purpose is to tow then you don't need anything special. hell you don't even need 4wd. any beater truck with a hitch can do that for you.

Re: what pickup to get?

Not just any beater truck can tow a 3000 lb car over mountains. Granted he is in Florida but if I were to suggest a truck it would be a Dodge Ram or Chevy Silvy. I hauled about 2000 lbs worth of steel, charcoal, pig, and supplies acoss pennsylvania witha Z28 Chevy Silverado. the thing never faltered even in PA with our "massive" mountains. Half decent mpg too for a v8 hauling all that.

Re: what pickup to get?

I must have missed the mountains when i was in Florida last.
the reason i suggested something like that is because he wants a brand new car, a track car, and a truck to tow the track car. to me that's expensive as hell but then again i'm not rich either so maybe that's just pennies to him.
My friends 1978 datsun pos truck could haul *** up hills and get out of mud pits and handle rough terrain. it just had a six in it. we were pulling two dirtbikes and a small trailer.

and i'm not trying to prove you wrong or start anything. just implying he doesn't need something big and brand new if it only takes his car to the track. that's just me being conservative though

Re: what pickup to get?

Get you a 97+ f250 ext cab with the 6.0 turbo diesel. It's the best bang for your buck. You could probably get a 01-02 for like 13k

Re: what pickup to get?

2005 nissan frontier

1) i have one. it rocks
2) v6 265 hp
3) good gas mileage... i fill up every 8 or 9 days
4) 6 speed manual
5) roomy interior for a midsized truck

yes, i'm biased, but it is a nice truck

you're probably just lookin for something used though. in which case i'd say either a ram or an f150

Re: what pickup to get?

2wd F150 with a 5.4 would do the trick Mine has a tow package even

If your going to tow any real weight then you want a full sized truck

Re: what pickup to get?

just get an older f-150 or silverado 1500, you don't need anything special. I mean, my ranger will be able to pull my mustang on a dolly, but my mustang is alot lighter than yours, so a ranger might be pushing it for you.

Re: what pickup to get?

Dodge Ram 2500 with the v10, or if you don't mind paying a little more on gas, CTD (cummins turbo diesal). You could probably get by with a 1500 witht he 360 (5.7L magnum) but you may have tranny issues, so have it checked befor you buy. I towed a ton of stuff with my truck (bed and uhaul full of school stuff) and never had a problem. Make sure it has the towing package because that includes a tranny cooler.

Re: what pickup to get?

Hey...on the 5.4 swap. My roomate's uncle did the same swap into his car. DOHC 5.4 out of a navigator, put a T56 behind it, and a twin screw on top. Crazy power.
As far as trucks go, I'd look at a full size definitely. No real need for diesel if you're also gonna use it for a dd. I'd either buy a 97-03 F150, 5.4, with towing package. Or buy a chevy with the 350.

Re: what pickup to get?

go for the cobra. sure insurance will be high for a little while but it's only one car payment instead of two cars and two insurance payments. or if you do this swap you're talking about, just plan it out so you get the right combo and can use the car at the track and dd. but i'm cheap and like it simple so that's just my opinion.

Re: what pickup to get?

the toyota trucks are weak, both power and chassis. they drive like a wet noodle and can't pull much weight.

ah sry. i missed that.

a good sturdy one sounds nice.

and from what i've seen they're cheaper fully loaded for a new one than a tacoma.
