I think Corey did some research on that or something. I know he did on oil filters... I'm thinking gas too.

Re: i gotta question about gas

Here is the deal on gas. All the stations in a area use the same storage tanks. The only differenc is the additives put in. The only exceptions are people who live near the refineries and they have some choices but you have to know what stations are getting what centers. Now to determine who has the best additives and is the most consistant. There are 2 Amoco ultimate and Sunoco premium

Re: i gotta question about gas

I use either sunoco, mobil or texaco..

If I use any other brand (get stuck without one local..) the car runs crappy (the Buick..) and I think that's a clear indication of fuel quality because..
1) factory supercharged
2) If it detects spark knock, it cuts timing like WHOAH to compensate
3) Which proves that if the gas isn't up to par.. the car won't run as well..

Re: i gotta question about gas

I like the 76 near me because it has 100 oct at the pump and 110-114 in the back. I like adding some of that lucas additive stuff to my gas too. took away my pinging so i didn't have to change my tune with piss gas.

Re: i gotta question about gas

OK you have to understand something about gas. Being that in most cities it comes from the same place no matter the name on the station. But to clear things up. Some stations use the same gas from the same truck for all 3 grades and add additives such as Toulene to bump up the octane. Some stations will order specific grades for their stations. What I liked about Amoco is the ultimate is clear and they had a little window in the handle to see it is clear. Regular gas is typically yellow/orange in color. So if the gas you are pumping is premium but it is yellowish it is a additive to regular gas. If it is clear it started life as a premium gas.

Now saying this I am not sure if there is a real world difference but I like my premium gas to be clear. My take is if the fuel distribution centers have a separate tanks for refined premium, I would think it would be more consistant at the proper octane than some smuck guesstimating the proper amout of additives in the fuel.

The other thing is watered down gas. Most ground storage tanks have water. This is not a big problem because gas floats on water. Stations use dip sticks to determine where the water level might be. This is also the reason to use newer stations. Nobody intentionally waters down gas it just happens to be already in the tanks.

One last think never store a car or any motor vehicle with ethanol gas in the tank because Alcohol absorbes water out of the atmosphere.

Re: i gotta question about gas

I'm the same way corey, most of the time, before filling up my car I check the gas to see what color it is.

Good thing the methanol in my aux tank is spraying to richen the gas and if water gets in there, oh well. it just cools the intake charge

Also, remember. 93 = 93 no matter where you are. Yes, some is refined as premium and some as normal, but it has to meet state laws regarding its octane count. If a gas station advertises 93 octane, it HAS to be 93. Like Corey said, it's just in the additives, which most of the time, don't really help or hurt you. I think they're all there for marketing. Sure they might help.... some, but I doubt it's good enough to make me only goto Shell or Texaco or something.

I usually goto QuickTrip. Gas is a couple cents cheaper and they guarentee their gasoline.
