Does anyone do Martial Arts?

I'm bored and had a tournament last week so I was just thinking about it. If you have, post what rank you are (if applicable), some achievements, what style, etc.

Me = 2nd (soon to be 3rd) degree black belt. 8 time Alabama Karate Circuit state champion. My style is a mixture of Tang Soo Do, Tae Kwon Do, and Jui Jitsu. I can do flips and fancy junk

I know at least Tedness has since he's Asian and all, Lol!

ive got a brother in my frat and he is black belt in something i forget. but i do know he is really good with all the sparring stuff. his specialty is weapons. he does some crazy stuff with broomsticks, i can just imagine how good he is with a regular weapon. also, my IST teacher is a master. he has been doing stuff for more than 40 years.

Re: Does anyone do Martial Arts?

Right now I'm taking Hapkido. I should be a yellow belt because I now all there is to white, but I think the guy wants to just keep people longer so it takes months to get another degree of belt. It's ridiculous, I don't think I'll stay in class after my 6 month contract is up.

I took Karate (Forgot what form exactly.. Starts with a J though.. ah well, it's Karate) for a year or so, maybe 2.. Second Degree Blue belt, I got bored after that..

I'd like to learn maybe something more.. ah hell if I know.

Re: Does anyone do Martial Arts?

Its best to try to find a personal trainer, what they teach you in class is very vague, because american martial arts is really watered down and very....weak

I was in tae kwon do for a couple years in college and am thinking about getting back into it. I was a green belt but it's been a while.

My instructor at school is a 7th degree blackbelt in hapkito, judo, and taekwondo. He was born in Korea and is internationally known

Re: Does anyone do Martial Arts?

My instructor used to be very hard style and beat the crap out of you but make you like it and want more, but then he got married and his wife got involved with the business side of it. Now we target mostly kids and he's softened up big time. I'd really like to find somewhere else that's harder but I don't have time to go to other cities for it. I always find it interesting how many people have taken some form of martial arts but didn't stick with it very long. It's interesting how, even on a relatively small board like this, how many people have taken it. I'm not very team oriented so I like the individuality of karate.

Re: Does anyone do Martial Arts?

Unless youre taught outside of a school, youre going to get a watered down version of anything. In what i call "true" martial arts, belts mean nothing. There is no rank system. Its you going and learning from someone who is better, and more talented and skilled than you are, applying it and working on more.

A personal friend of mine, in high school, he wrestled, he "studied" martial arts, never too formal training in a classrom, other than 2-3 months of king-fu, and he kicked his buddies ***, who was a 3rd degree blackbelt in a few things

Belts mean nothing, titles mean nothing, championships and records mean nothing. You could go out to an asian country, and probably find a guy who could devatate 90% of the teachers in the states, an no one has ever heard of them.

Thats why ill never step foot in any classes for martial arts.

Re: Does anyone do Martial Arts?

I also learned Irish Drunken Boxing.

We use some pretty sweet weapons, broken bottles, rocks, shoes, potatos..

Re: Does anyone do Martial Arts?

Where in America are you going to find "true", unadulterated martial arts? No where, and I don't plan on going to the Orient to learn from them.
