Re: Nice Viper -- world record vid inside

he's got some serious torque. it looked like that back end smacked down on the ground on his first run. I bet if he had some stiffer springs out back he could push off better and improve the time a bit.
i can't even imagine the rush and adrenaline one would get with a car going that fast.

I could.

Imagine walking down this shopping isle and this fat woman running at you at a mad speed with the look of hunger in her eyes as she sees the free samples behind you.

I couldn't sleep that night, adrenaline was pumping through my veins.

well, to go that fast, you NEED a roll cage, so eliminate that from the catoragory.

Basically, he owns the fastest street legal 6 speed viper...period.

street legal is such a vague term nowadays.

no, sometimes getting it to squat like that lets the weight transfer easier thus improving traction.

how does jerking the car back like that and losing momentum help improve traction? i can see how getting it to squat right off the line to help dig it out of the hole will help trac, but i'd rather have firm hesitant free shifts pushing forward from 2nd gear on up.

then again, obviously he knows something cause hes running 8's and, well, youre kinda not. if youre thinking about it now he prolly tried it years ago.

Re: Nice Viper -- world record vid inside

yup, and i answered, kinda.

if hes smart enough to build a car that fast, hes obviously smart enough to know how to launch it and know how he wants his suspension. he has more than likely ran more than one suspension setup, and has found one he liked and was able to launch. maybe he likes a softer rear end(no pun intended) that gives him more feedback as to how the tires are getting traction, as opposed to a stiff rear where he will be driving more on instinct, not on feel.

sometimes, especially in drag racing, what works best for one car and driver, doesnt always work best for another. this is very true in nascar especially, where each car is the same 95% of the time, the other 5% is based on settings the driver likes for certain tracks and conditions.

thats the way i look at it.

besides, thats not a "Drag" viper, is a street car also, maybe after the track, he slaps the stockers back on the rear, and commutes to and from work, and, while having a stiff rear might get him another .10 in the 1/4 that could be easily accounted for with better driving, is not worth him having to bounce to and from work.

When you're in the 8s, it takes quite a bit to get that extra 10th. Each 10hp = 0.1sec until you reach the 11s. Then it's more and more and more to get that 10th

The car has independant rear suspension, which is usually hard to get to cooperate that the track. Most typical IRS setup like to squat rather than lift the rear under power. My father has an 89 Tird, with IRS, and if you power brake it to bring the rpms up, rather than lift the rear, it squats, which is natural to most IRS setups.

Thats the problem with IRS setups, and thats why the car jerks like it does. In a live axle car, like you mustang for example, it tries to push the rear end to the ground, which lifts the rear. When you have a lot of power, enough to lift the front tires for example, the car will lift the front tires, while the car tries to push the rear towards the ground, so weight transfer puts all the weight on the rear tires. In an IRS setup, it tries to pull the car down onto the tires, and with that large amount of power, it pulls the tires under the car, and then picks up a front tire. So two opposite actions are occuring, and causes that nasty looking jerk. He just has the power to overcome that akward type of launch to run his times.

Having stiff springs or not has nothing to do with this. Its just how IRS works in those cars, and stiff springs would probably hurt it more because the suspension couldnt shift, which puts all that shock on the tires, and kills the 60ft times.

^ good explanation. thanks. i like how you explained it and didn't try to make me feel inferior like others because I'm not a part of the 10 second POS DSM club.
