Re: MUSCLE

It is impossible for the V6 to be a muscle car as a muscle car requires a big block motor. The V6, just like the GT, Cobra, GT 500, and any one of the other 100 different variations of mustang are just pony cars.

Re: MUSCLE

So small blocks don't qualify as muscle? Tell that to the DZ302 equipped '69 Z/28s. Advertised HP: 290. Real world HP: 390+. Not to mention the modern Z06 427 small block 'Vettes and the 426 HP 6.2L 2010 Camaro SS. I may be totally off base, but to me "muscle" is defined by how fast a vehicle scoots down the road (track), not by it's block designation. Standing by to receive fire... :pissed:

I will gladly tell that to any and all small block equipted vehicle you bring in front of me. Muscle Car = Big Block. Period, end of story. Small block = Pony Car. In fact, if you want to discuss high powered cars, then even the Ford GT is NOT a muscle car.

Corvettes don't count in the discussion as they are sports cars....2 door 2 seater = sports car. Back seat = pony car.

So, no matter how many numbers you throw out there from any small block engine, it will just be a pony car. It's just the way it is.

Re: MUSCLE

I don't think a muscle car has to have a big block. A '69 Chevelle with a 383 isn't any less of a muscle car (in my eyes) than one with a 396. To me, it's big bodied and V8. Camaros, Mustangs, and the like aren't full-sized, so they fall into their own category (pony cars) between muscle and sport. 'vettes are sports cars.

Re: MUSCLE

No way a 'vette isn't a muscle car... gt & cobras=muscle as well, v6 mustang=pony car (or as me and my other american v6s friends call it "american sport"). IMO but thats just me. We are entitled to our own opinion.

Re: MUSCLE

Some of you young folks need to read up on the first muscle cars. They were not all big blocks. A muscle car is a stripped down-to-basics car (like the early Barracuda or the early 60's Malibu before it became a Chevelle) with a lot of power. Saying that only muscle cars had big blocks is like saying that a '70 Boss 429 Mustang, which BTW was a Ford hemi, is "just" a pony car and not a muscle car. That's ridiculous. Oh well. I knew I'd take some fire for my remarks. That's alright; I stand by them.

Re: MUSCLE

The boss was one that I forgot about but didn't see the need to update the thread. Big motor is a requirement for muscle. Big motor is not a small block. If need be, fine, include big inch small blocks like the aformentioned 383. However, any 302, 351, 350 car is not, and will not be a muscle car. Not to mention 232, 281, and 289 cars.

Re: MUSCLE

As the only one on this site that drives a real muscle car. I will explain it for you. The term "muscle car" was invented in the '60s. it described a big heavy car that in no way shape or form was a fast car of sports car unless a high powered engine was installed. therefor a malibu with a inline 6 cylinder is NOT a muscle car. But when the same car was given a 454 and badged a chevelle. it is now a muscle. Muscle car were big fat cars with poor handling. they could only go fast in a straight line because of it's oversized engine.

The term "pony car" was invented when the first mustang was built. what makes it different from a muscle car is a pony car is lighter, smaller, and built for handling. Some pony cars did come with big block engines like the '69 camaro ss, and the 429 cobra jet mustang, but the car is still a pony car, because it's built on a pony car platform.

The corvette is not a muscle car, because it's a small 2 seater sports car. The corvette actually falls under the roadster group.

I hope this clears it up.

Re: MUSCLE

I wasn't trying to start a war or anything about this subject, folks. Was just trying to generate some animated discussion. If big blocks are only to be considered muscle, so be it. I will always respect the mighty mouse motors, though. I personally have owned a 1968 Formula S Barracuda with a 340 4-speed that could, and did, outrun a 383 Roadrunner and a 69 SS 396 El Camino. My 'Cuda was stock except for an aftermarket electronic ignition. Both of those wins came over "muscle" cars, so you can see why I have lots of respect for tight-winding small blocks that get to their power very quickly. I have also ridden in a 68 GTX with a 440 Wedge that literally scared the **** out of me. All of that being said, and all of the other thoughts and opinions aside, we all share a love of V-8 horsepower, and it's folks like us that will keep the muscle, er pony, cars alive in this age of "green" BS. No harm, no foul. And ease up a bit; my flame retardant *** shield is about burnt through...

Re: MUSCLE

It doesn't have to be a big block to be a muscle car. It just has to be a large wheel base car with a high horsepower engine. A Pontiac tempest with a 400 small block is a muscle car.

As for American muscle. It's just a name it doesn't have to be correct.

Because ford forced them to change their name several years back. They used to be Mustang something or other.

Yah, it used to be "Mustang Tuning". I remember checking their site one day and "American Muscle" popped up. I was confused at first, then it said in the upper corner, "formally known as Mustang Tuning".

Re: MUSCLE

I think a muscle car is one that when it accerlates it gives you a g-force of xg's that throws you on your seat to the point that you can't move your head from the headrest. So in some terms I think a v6 turbocharged can be a muscle car if it qualifies in my definition. I know the history of muscle and pony but definitions change with the times.

MUSCLE CAR : Big block v8. Two doors. Rear wheel drive. Made in America. And has a back seat.

SPORTS CAR : Lacking one of the above.

Re: MUSCLE

Unfortunately you're going to lose that argument upton. It appears the definition of muscle has been bastardized over the generations to where a Mazda speed can be called muscle because of the gforce. I just let this thread go because it will be impossible to state the case.

Madza is not american as stated before american cars have to be muscle. And if u think someone has been basterized change my mind with proof. Just because u have you own set opinions.
