War of the Worlds

Who saw it?

No, not the re-make.

The original.

I watched the original a few minutes ago and heard the broadcast they made over radio back October 30, 1938.

My dad was telling me that when they broadcasted it, they announced the show and they started to go along broadcasting like dance music. Then during the songs they'd have this interuppting "Flash News" and they started talking about how they are seeing UFO's and aliens. Unfortunately for a few people, some tuned in AFTER they announced that this was a show. People began freaking out, and a few people actually committed suicide because of the hysteria going on.

It doesn't get better than that. You should see it and listen to the original broadcast, it's pretty good.

Oh but the movie is something to laugh about from today's standards

Re: War of the Worlds

The broadcast is pretty creepy if you imagine yourself just tuning into this on the radio.

think about the general public today, and then... think about this. We are getting smarter on average...compare that to people in the 30s

Nope, not really. I think people would fall for it, like Johnny Carson's TP shortage.

Re: War of the Worlds

Well think about it, people were smart back then.. but the radio is the only way they could get quick information. Like, think back to when you saw the 9/11 attacks. When you woke up and saw that on TV. You almost thought it wasn't real, but then you realized it was.

The broadcast was done so well that when people tuned in they started to hear dance music followed by small interuptions about meteors and stuff happening in New Jersey. Then it progressively got worse till the army was attacking the aliens. It all seems very authentic.

Not only that, but it was also an original idea. I think they were fooled, but we all learned from that.
