Yeah, the water level is different on both sides, that's the whole reason for the lock system.

ive been through a lock before while in a boat. back in pittsburgh our 5th grade field trip went on some scientific boat where they measured the ph of the water, checked out plankton in microscopes, and pulled some invertabraes from the bottom with this crane thing. there was also a lock we had to go through and it was pretty sweet.

Yeah, when I go fishing on the river sometimes we go through the locks. There's a huge dam around here, it's pretty fun.

Man those boats are fast!! Great vid to demonstrate how the lock system allows large craft to transverse from the Atlantic to Pacific Oceans, and Vice Versa with having to go around the tip of South America. Saving time and money.
