Actually, I was just thinking that the other day. We've finally gotten out of the ugly 4 banger era, but now we're in the giant horsepower 4-door era.

Did you look at the same pictures as I did? I didn't really see any simularities. Maybe it is because I couldn't get over how ugly the camaro was and how hot the challenger looks.

dude those numbers are not for the weak at heart. the amount of skill to control a vehicle of that magnitude is incredible, and should strictly be left to professionals.

Re: The golden age of performance.

What about the new Monte Carlo SS that is out? It has a 303-hp 5.3L small block V8 engine. Given it is still fwd, but come on it has power again

Re: The golden age of performance.

eh, i have a dislike for MC's, not cause of the car by any means, but this guy that constantly tried to hang around my chick was constantly saying his 02 MC SS was the fastest thing, able to beat 03/04 cobras with ease. well i put him in his place with a 97 gst spyder(a chicks car by his words) still on teh stock turbo and boost level. sheer decimation.

anyways, its still fwd. i remember my buddy launching his GTP and the wheelspin and torquesteer, and thats what, 240something hp from a sc 3.8? i cant imagine 300ft/lbs from a 5.3l v8 going to the fronts. oh wait, yeah i can, with interest.

since brent is gettin all technical, and there is indeed a HUGE 3hp difference between the 99-00 and the 01-04 bold indicates no noticeable power gains.........bold futhermore indicates that brent can suck my balls.

well........see, ford ****ed up by not puttin all 3.9s in the 04s, and more than half had the 3.8s......also, the 3.9 is in a class by itself, it cannot be compared to anything for it is far greater

yeah, this power craze is going to die very very quickly for the same reason that it died in the 70s.

I disaggree, I think cars will only get faster, as the technology increases. The high gas prices haven't slowed the auto makers yet, and they won't stay high forever.

Re: The golden age of performance.

1) nowadays insurance on a decently powerful car = outrageous

back then? WHAT INSURANCE??

2) nowadays you don't get full raw power.. you get friggen automatic trannies around every single corner, and electronic nannies and ninnies at every curve

3) anything over 300 HP is gonna hit your wallet HARD.. back then it wasn't quite as big an impact.. IE 2** HP out of a neon over 3** HP out of a mustang.. it wasn't worth a 10k difference then (maybe 3800 for a skylark GS over 3000 for a base skylark.. 350 2 barrel no options..)

4) the cost of fuel nowadays is gonna hit you a lot harder than it would have back then

5) Cars are not as good looking as they were back then.. why else would they try to go RETRO while using cheap plastic interiors?

IMO I'd much rather live in the 70s when sports cars were plentiful and cheap to own and operate..

its not that bad really. it gets better when you get older. the loan officer at the subbie dealership said his 05 vette was around 2400/yr to insure, not too terribly bad to insure, besides, if you own a vette, 200 a month for insurance is chump change.

but im with you on the insurance part. i think it should be an option, not a law. once its a law, the insurance companies now can charge whatever rates they see fit, cause its a necessity and by law they can **** us over. insurance is a legal scam thats backed by johnny law.

no, you get tuned power. you have a decent motor that makes a nice power curve, as opposed to back then a big motor that has no power after 4k.

but fuel prices arent stopping those who want performance oriented vehicles, or big "gas guzzling" suv's(which arent even gas guzzlers anymore, my 06 tahoe ls 5.3l gets better mileage than my gt)

eye of the beholder. theyre going retro cause it sells, and they(the big 3 domestic makers) have lost all ability to produce new designs.

true, then a few years it all came crashing down.

and i doubt this performance era is going to come down within the next few years. if anything, california will become so strict car makers will stop selling their cars here, and thatll be a smack in the face for cali's tax income. sending those who want the cars packing to bum**** idaho or alabama where you will never see a smog station or emissions testing in its life.

Re: The golden age of performance.

you cannot make insurance an option, if it was people who have a hard time affording it right now wouldnt buy it. so if i get someone who is poor who cant afford insurance who hits me at 50 mph and totals my car and sends me to a hospital... well he is paying for it, not me. so if he doesnt have insurance where is he going to come up with 100,000+ dollars not inlcuding any possible law suit you drive on him?

as for fuel prices, theres no way they are coming back down, we have had the cheapest fuel for many many years and now we are paying the piper. they will flux and maybe come down some, but in no way could i be shocked if we had 3 dollar a gallon prices with in the next year.

funs going to be over soon, no way gas prices are coming down, nor insurance. the prices are just going up, as well as the price of these cars. and whos going to be able to feed a V8 that gets 15 mpg with premium, on top of that its a 40,000 car, as well as it could easily cost you 2000 to keep it insured? its over guys, same with most of the big trucks and so forth unless we learn to make them much more fuel efficent.

I still disagree, I don't think its over, not while there are hard working americans who like thier trucks big and thier cars fast.
