Slushbox

When people say 'slushbox' when talking about transmissions.. what are they talking about?

Re: Slushbox

how crappy ford automatic transmissions are (slow shifting, and overall heavy/crappy in general)

Re: Slushbox

the 4r70w. epitome of a slushbox. they say its slushy cause it shifts slow, and isnt predictable, as in, if you take off easy, it might take a long time to shift out of first or second, but if you go full throttle itll shift into 2nd halfway through 1st and bog you down.

Re: Slushbox

the 4r70w is actually a nice transmission...but you also have to remember that automatics were invented for comfort of driving and whatnot. im slowly getting soem 5spd parts for my 90 to get rid of my "slushbox" I got the pedals, wiring, flywheel, pressure plate and clutch cable so far

Re: Slushbox

I would argue that dictionaries should have pictures of an A4LD by "slushbox". They're probably the worst transmission Ford ever sold. I've never seen one that didn't "pop" into reverse...

no ****. their trannies always shift very crisp and know when to do what you want them to do without even thinking about it.

another automatic i thought ran very well was my buddies auto 96 awd talon. it shifted very firm and fast, even under full throttle 18psi loads, and held up to countless 8-10psi brake-boost launches.

my moms neons auto is pretty crisp as well, though the car itself is a gutless bastard down low, but is really peppy on the freeway(if you floor it, it feels like it downshifts all the way to 1st and takes off screaming).

Re: Slushbox

nah that would be a auto 2.3l fox.

wanna know the epitome of a slow car, even worse than most honduh's?

a 95-99 eclipse GS/RS auto. horrible. 17's on a good day. theres a reason it took bryan spilner 80,000 to keep up with a rx7 and run "10's"

Most true statement I've ever seen on this board. I know, because I used to drive one. Luckily, I had the DIS version (91-93) which had 105hp vs. the earlier models with only.... get this... 88hp.

88 ****ING HORSEPOWER IN A DAMN "MUSTANG"!

I kid you not, I've seen people post slips on Stangnet of the older models running high 19's to low 20's.

88 hp + A4LD = **** it, I'm walking

Re: Slushbox

actually, come to think of it, theres something even SLOWER than a 2.3l auto fox, and i once drove one.

a 2.3l auto 74 mustangII. yes indeedy. rated at i believe(from what ive seen on a site before) at 75ish hp(the 2.8l v6 was 95hp), but what it lacked in pick up, man the suspension on that little sucker and the lightness well made up for it taking turns at 50 and just sticking through it. whipping 180's in little under 1.5 lanes(almost inside its own radius) was sweet too. if i ebraked it(when it was wet) i could bust a 180 within the same lane.
