Looking for a good algorithm

Ok, I am looking for a good algorithm, or just any algorithm, that will let me setup up a bracket system. The purpose is to run bowling brackets during leagues and tournaments.

So, I am looking for an algorithm that will take an array of values and create groups of 8, 12, or N unique values. Since a person could sign up for any amount of brackets, it would need to make sure that that person is never assigned to the same bracket more than once.

Make sense?

Anyone know of an existing algorithm that might do such a task? I know a number of them exist, I just can't find their names so I can look up their process...all I can find is pre-existing software that contains "the best algorithm available".

Are you looking for source code? Or just a general process?

Re: Looking for a good algorithm

Well, I will take either. Source code would make life quicker and easier....but I will just take the process if that is all that is known and move that into source code.

Re: Looking for a good algorithm

Code:
Get list of people
Throw it in a CStringArray (list)
Create as many CStringArrays as you've got groups (N)
while (there are people in the list of people)
{
	for (int i = 0; i < N; i++)
	{
		random = Get a random number;
		Group[i].Add(list[random]);
		list.Remove(random);
	}
}
It's kindof pseudo-codey...I have trouble writing straight algorithms, and I'm not on my computer with Visual Studio, or I'd have just coded it up. Let me know if that kindof makes sense.

Re: Looking for a good algorithm

That is what I am trying to write...instead of buying the software that runs upwards of $400...I want to write my own and sell it for much less.

Re: Looking for a good algorithm

just write a hashing table for BST/linked list's located at those alocated spots. Scan before you insert.
