Small Business Resources

Myself and a couple buddies are looking at starting a business. As of right now we are more looking at a weekend/side business to see where it goes first. It is hard for me to give up health insurance for something that is uncertain. That is why I have turned down several jobs at Colsa that are temps with a possibility of full time.

But before we embark on something this life changing, we want to research more.

Is there places where I can research small business loans, goverment grants for small business etc.

Also a place where I can find out about local/state/federal laws on businesses, i.e. lisences etc.

Is there a place I can find out about zoning laws and stuff like that, since if/when we start it, it will be done from the home until if/when it takes off and we get an actual shop and make it full time. Basically is there a website i can read up on if it is legal/illegal to work out of the home on vehicles. Ya know, if im turning a wrench on a truck commercially can the cops gonna come knock on my door.

Is there a website about health insurance for small business and its employees. I think if we can get health insurance for us we would be more willing to look at it full time more from the start then a part time job.

Is there some kind of office locally I can go to, to talk to someone for advice. do's and dont's, etc.

Basically I am looking for any and all info I can find. We want to do a full research before we embark on this. Two of us have always dreamed of having our own shop, one of us is a good salesman, and i need to convince my brother to move.

I appeciate all info guys.

Re: Small Business Resources

wow youre exactly where me and my buddies are right now. we all have 9-5 jobs but want more money and want to do side jobs. me, i want to do more fiberglassing/stereo enclosures, my buddy wants to do more of a sub-vendor type of thing, where someone orders a part from us, and we order the part from the manufacturer and ship it to our customer and we get the profit.

were looking into renting out a industrial suite right now, 1600sq ft garage with 2 doors, a small office area and commodities. hes trying to lock down a goverment grant so we can get a lift and a crapload of necessary tools and equipment(air compressors and what not). hes the businessman type and this **** is right up his alley.

ill ask him tomorrow for more info on where to go for more info.

when the time comes it would be possible

What we are thinking is starting it as a internet based 4x4 parts seller. When we get the cash and stuff ready we will be getting a shop. Buddies mom is going to put one of those metal buildings up and rent it to us...which is great since it will be cheap rent for a shop, good land lord, plus a Wall Triana store front. From there we will do installs of lifts etc and be a custom fab shop...ie cages, brackets, SASes etc along with local parts selling and still keep up with the website.

We figure starting internet based with a note saying do installs in N. AL we will be able to bypass most of the start up costs of a business...for now. A lisence is only 60 bucks. Just gotta figure out where we can get stuff for wholesale...most likely be a middle man operation for now...someone orders it from us, we order it from the dealer and have it shipped to them.

once i get some schooling, god damnit you better hire me. This is exactly like what I have always wanted to do. And if you need some help with the web side, I am decently proficient, and am learning things from Brent all the time. But seriously, I would LOVE to get in on this some how, if you need the help.

Never been there, but I have heard, even from a guy that was working there at the time, that it wasn't that great. Plus its way out there. So I completely agree!

Re: Small Business Resources

From what I have been told, (I have been there before) Back when it was first started it was started more or less like what im trying to do. A couple wheelers that wanted a shop for the public. Good knowladge, good work, etc...but as they all retired the shop filled with ricer mechanics trying to make a quick buck in this town. They are overpriced, and not very good customer service.

Nate we will need help setting up the website. I am trying to get ahold of the owner of fullsizebronco.com to get ourselves a domain. I know squat about websites...especially one where we will be trying to sell parts and stuff like that.

When we get the ball rolling and the website made, Im going to apply for the company to be a member of SEMA. They offer certifications for the mechanics. You take a test that was created in a joint effort by SEMA and ASE.

Im quite sure when the shop doors open we will need another mechanic. As it stands now, there is Chris and I as mechanics and RJ as the salesman.

a guy over at FSB was inthe accessories business for 5 years and just recently opened up a shop and gave me some good inside info on wholesale places and getting direct with other companies.

Dangit, if you'll wait till next year you can have a manager lol. Just messing. I'm in the learning process on business ownership and actually toying with the idea of taking an extra semester of entrepeneur classes teaching me how to setup and run a business of my own.

Not to intrude on Nate's thunder here...but.... http://www.thecivicshop.com ...

I had some cooler ideas for that site but a week wasn't enough time to get them in place. So, he got what you see there.

Needless to say, I can help you out with your site...we can toss around some ideas at some point if you would like and see where you would like to go. My "prices" are pretty cheap too.

nah I know im no good at design, i was thinking more in the lines of maintaning and helping run the site. And even tho I am not a mechanic by any means (i plan on starting classes soon) Doesn't mean I can't help around the shop in other aspects if needed, as long as its on the weekend.
