They made a classic mistake. When having engine problems never I repeat never try to circle back to the airport to try and land. You lose to much altitude when banking and you will crash. This is a jumbo airplane and there are not many places to land but going straight and hope you have a interstate to try and land on. This Aircraft was doomed. The pilot did do the best and preventing deaths. Looks like he bled off speed and came in slow and hard which broke of the tail and flight deck.

We had two different aircraft take SAM's up the tail pipe during climb out (take off)at Bagdad Intl. Airport. In both cases the aircraft lost at least one engine and the other lost two on the same side. They both circled back and landed safely. I think lack of seat time being it was a reserve crew had the biggest effect on not landing the aircraft.

what were they supposed to do? I'm just curious, I don't know myself.

Re: C-5 Aircraft crash at DOVER AFB

I have been on several crash teams and the biggest problem is not enough speed when climbing at take off. The C-5 is underpowered by todays standard and cannot afford to lose a engine at takeoff if loaded with cargo. In flight training they teach not to try and circle around back to the airport if you are not at a certain altitude. You are suppose to fly straight and level and find a suitable place to ditch or land. Being it is a C-5 there are not many options. If you were in any number of multi engine A/C in the US inventory such as a C-130 or C-17 they have more than enough thrust to continue to fly missing one engine. Loaded a C-5 will struggle. Hwere at lockheedmartin we are reengining the C-5 with new GE-90 engines with almost double the thrust of current engines. I guess that one wont get modded!!!
