I need a lap top

Ok so I'm remodeling my whole house. In doing my home office, I decided to get rid of the PC, getting a lap top and setting up a wireless network in the house. I am no expert in computers so I come to you my interweb buddies for advise. I want a good lap top. Something That I'm not gonna want to throw out the window for at least 5 years. What do you guys recomend?

Get a Mac and call it a day then.

I've got a NetGear for my wireless router. Seems to do ok with my PSP. Plus, it had the four ports on the back.

internet browsing, downloading music, videos, managing my finances, keep my pictures from my digital camera, reports and presentations on microsoft office, porn:pnoid: , maybe gaming if I find the time, nothing major or out of the ordinary. I don't have a closed budget but I don't wanna go crazy either.

Re: I need a lap top

well if you want to game and game good it wont be cheap and a dinky 1.X processor wont cut it. For just normal boring stuff just about any will do the deed. If you dont game you should be able to get 5 years out of a near top end laptop~ but if you game... lol expect 2 years max 3 if you dont play the top of the line games.

Re: I need a lap top

1.73 GHz is fine for a Office. Dell doesn't offer much for gamers in laptops 2.26GHz is max for a Latitude

laptops are not ideal for gaming...

I would not expect to have a computer longer then 2 years

gaming is definetly not my priority. I've had a compaq PC for @ 6 years now and I've been ok with it, I will most likely use it for "just normal boring stuff" But I had an IBM notebook once, 6 months down the road I wanted to take a sledge hammer to it.

Re: I need a lap top

I've got a Dell 700m. It's pretty nice. I've been happy with it. It's not for gaming (but hell, I've got two watercooled desktops for that...), but it does all the regular mundane stuff really well. Portability was my main requirement, so I bought the smallest one that Dell made. They range from really cheap to really expensive, depending on how you configure it. I'd at least check 'em out if I were you. Link.

I really just have a portable desktop, and it's a dell. Been alright. I've had problems, I'd most defintiely suggest the warranty for a Dell.

Re: I need a lap top

Well the "laptop" i bought has a desktop processor in it. It wasn't really made for reliability I don't think. It seems more of a "how much can we cram in this large laptop frame" sort of thing.

I have friends with Dell who have had no problem, and they have smaller ones. I don't know man.

I've had my Dell laptop for a bit over a year, now. Haven't had any trouble with it (after I removed all the bloatware Dell installs from the factory... ugh).

Re: I need a lap top

I have a Dell and I havent had any problems out of mine but it wont last 5 years....

What is your budget for it? Dell has workstation notebooks.. M90's that are 2800 dollars but are excellent notebooks.

Intel® Core™ Duo Processor T2600 (2.16GHz/667MHz FSB)
@3K after all my options. I wasn't working with a budget, but wasn't expecting to spend 3k either. I don't know what to do now, lol. I'm gonna have to compare it to desktop prices and weigh my options.

dual core processor is over kill !!! Don't expect dual-core systems to be the performer for demanding single-threaded applications such as most games and office apps ------ Spec out a latitude D810

How true. Bunches of AOL Crap!!

I am mixed on Dell and Gateways. I currently have a gateway. It did give me a problem once. Windows corrupted. Thing was it was while I was in Cali and had to run the week from the CD using Umbunto Linux. Not the computers fault.

As far as life. Give it 2 years or even less. Technology changes daily.

Just my two cents.

Yes, i understanf that within months of me buying a computer, better and faster computers will be out there. that is why I'm looking for something top of the line or close to that. So I'll be happy with it for a while.

I bought mine at best buy for 299. AMD 3200, etc. As soon as I got home it was in pieces.

Took all the parts, and stood up 4 computers. Parts and pieces, pieces and parts!!

Re: I need a lap top

I bought a Dell Inspiron 5100 july of 2003. I spend 2500 bucks on it, and it's still pretty in date as far as technology I guess. The only thing I would ask is more ram, but that can be fixed. Going on 3 years now, been through 3 fans, 1 motherboard, 1 keyboard, and about to get a new cd drive. One thing I can say about dell is they stand behind their warranty. My computer has a rough life though...alot of dropping and throwing and stuff falling and spilling on it. Overall, I'd buy a Dell again.

Re: I need a lap top

My parents bought two Dell desktops. One was a PIII-600 machine. The other was a 2.2ghz P4 box (damn RDRAM memory...). We never had any trouble out of either of them. The PIII lasted without a single problem until I decomissioned it and stripped it for parts. My parents still use the P4 box, today. My brother had a power supply die on his Dell (fixed under warranty).

If you're worried about getting more computer for your dollar, stay as far away from laptops as you can get. Only get the laptop if you just have to have the portability, you pay a premium for it.

I have to use my Dell now and it's running like a champ to be four years old now. I would like more than 128mb of RAM though.

I'd like something with a large screen, lots of hard drive space, 512 - 1 gig of memory, a great video card, and possibly a TV tuner so I can plug the laptop into a TV and start watching things thru there if needed
