new pc w00t

finally got sick of this limping dell. its good for internet and regular stuff, but when we have lan parties the games we play are limited to "what thomas can run on his pc", which sucks. UT2004 is the extent of its abilities at lowest settings.

so im building a new one.

Maxtor MaxLine III 7V250F0 250GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive
DFI LANPARTY UT nF4 SLI-DR Expert Socket 939 NVIDIA nForce4 SLI ATX AMD Motherboard
AMD Athlon 64 3800+ Venice 1GHz HT Socket 939 Processor Model ADA3800BPBOX
mushkin eXtreme Performance 2GB (2 x 1GB) 184-Pin DDR SDRAM Dual Channel Kit System Memory
Xoxide X-Purity Case
UV Cold Cathode Kit
^^^since the MoBo is UV reactive(the clips/harness connectors all glow under uv light, why the **** not?)
Sunbeam Nuuo 550 Watt Modular Power Supply

im going to use a buddies spare GeForce 6800 for the time being, and upgrade to dual 7800's as funds allow, with another 2gb of ram. ill also be using the 40gb hd i have in the current dell to run the OS and smaller programs of the newer pc, and use the 250gb for larger programs and whatnot. then ill get a 10k rpm raptor(or two) and run them in raid when that starts to be the norm.

That is the norm for me. Both my gaming desktops run dual 74gb Raptors in RAID0.

Re: new pc w00t

go to EXTREME Overclocking - Tweaking PC Hardware To The Max and see whats the good word. They are always testing crap and you can find what works best and what not. Im due for another system... overclocking my stock 1.8ghz processor to 2.5ghz is taking its toll

What are the timmings on that ram, what power level do they operate under best? What are their clocked timmings as well. Is the processor locked? You care about altering the clock or just running it normally. If your cooling solution is air then you probably wont be able to do much~ water cooling is where its at. My next system will be a 64 bit dualcore athlon im thinking.

yeah my buddies are big into computers and performance, and basically i told them what are some of the best compnents out there. i guess that mobo has so many features you can tweak, that mishkin ram loves to be oc'ed, and that amd was one my buddy was looking at.

id love dual core, but not at 1200$ a unit. the mobo i have is socket 939, and amd's dual cores use that same socket, so i can always upgrade later when prices fall.

Re: new pc w00t

When I built my last one, I didn't see the performance/price for the X2s being good enough for me to justify getting one over the 4000+. My next one will be dual core...probably in 18-24 months.

Re: new pc w00t

do 2gb ram sticks overclock good, they used to blow for overclocking. I have been out of the loop but they have probably pulled the timmings into a more acceptable range.

Re: new pc w00t

Man I gotta fix mine. I need to send my board back for the second time. Don't think I'm gonna use SLI again until I up that wimpy 450watt PSU.

My Nemesis.

I'm going to have to limp along. I have a car to buy and another to fix. So the money will be sparse

They wont overclock like 1GB will... but you will see a nice improvement in gaming... especially newer games... 1GB just barely cuts in now.

Re: new pc w00t

lol anything is better than my dell, which i just did some quick upgrades to, its a 2.4ghz P4, 1gb ddr sdram, and a 128mb video card(a older PCI(not pci express) card) so i could play some of the lighter FPS/RTS games.

ran 3dmark05 and got a 295. my buddy has a 1.8ghz amd, 512mb ram and he was using that 3d card im going to get from him, and got somewhere in the 5000 range.

im not looking into really OCing all that much. maybe bump up the CPU to around 2.6ghz, even though that mobo has ****loads of options as far as tweeking goes.

Re: new pc w00t

I've got a pair of 1gb sticks in my little box. They're Mushkin PC4000, so they'll do 250mhz FSB. The timings on them aren't terrible, either. My big box has a pair of 1gb Corsair PC3200 sticks in it. The latency on those is about the same as the Mushkins, but they'll only do ~210mhz FSB with the stock latency (they were some of the first 1gb sticks to hit the market).
