yo speaking of engine swap will the 99+ 4.6V8 engines directly bolt on to the manual tranny on a 99+ v6 stang? if so they always have 99+ V8's on ebay for 1000 or cheaper with low mileage. just do a vortech s-trim or a roush blower and fully forged internals and nos(maybe) and have a nice little 12 sec car under 6 grand.

http://www.modularfords.com/forums/ For any of you who doubt the potential of the modular Ford V8s, go hang out on this website for a while and check it out, I think you will have your minds changed. I am a longtime fan of the Ford smallblocks, and I think the 289 was one of the toughest and best engines ever built, but I love my 4.6L too! In a 96+ body a modular engine will bolt in a lot easier than a 5.0 will, and the 99+ engines are the best there is with about 35+ more horsepower from improved heads.

No, I meant 289, that was what a 302 was before they stroked it and made it weaker and gave it a little more power. A 4.6 is a 281 cu in, NOT a 289. Ford small blocks, 221, 260, 289, 302, 351W, these are all the same block, just bored, stoked etc to get larger displacements. and yes, they were all V8 engines.

You want the best engine possible for your 64 1/2, build a balanced and blueprinted, forged as much as possible 289 high performance for it, it would make that 302 look sad indeed. Put a good high lift and duration cam in it, port and polish everything possible. Edlebrock torquer II intake, 750 cfm Holley double pumper, tuned headers and exhaust, you should be hitting around 600-700 hp with a good mallory ignition system.

The 318 Mopar small block is in the same sort of family as the Ford 289, 302, 351W, I can't remember the smaller sizes, but the 318, then the 340, then the 360, are all also the same block, I am sure we all know the Chevy small blocks, 265, 283, 327, 350, 400 small block, again, all the same block.

The 351W, or Windsor, at least in my opinion, and also that of a lot of other people, is not that good an engine, its inherintly weak in that Ford has already pretty much bored and stroked it to its limit, it can be built to run well, but when this is done they tend not to last long. The 351C or Cleveland engine is or was a much better engine, it was a big block with the same displacement and indeed they were sold sometimes interchangably, you might not even know which one you were getting unless you knew engines well. The Cleveland had much more potential and was a stronger block.

Yeah, I have heard of it, they are used in a lot of AC Cobra kit cars, as for durability, I wouldn't bet on them lasting very long, I am sure they are fast as long as they do last though. :

There was a tale way back, I don't doubt it was true, that Ford built one, had it on a bench dyno, balanced, blueprinted, with all the best goodies, got almost 1000 hp out of it.
