Just lost my job.

So in a supreme case of irony, I walked in to work today, to find a note on the door state that Damons in Chantilly is now closed, and to thank all those who had given us patronage over the years. So as of today, I am officially unemployed. Not a breath of warning had been spoken, and the GM didnt find out until 9 am this morning when he showed up. The best part is, since pay is only 7.50 an hour for Bartenders, my unemployment is only 5.00$x40 hours per week.... FML.

That sucks! I was out of work for almost a year the only advice I can say is keep your head up things will work out. You don't have a attic full of baseball cards do you?

This economy isn't recovering, no matter what anyone says. Between Bush and Obama I am shocked we are as good as we are now.

Re: Just lost my job.

Sorry to hear. Keep your chin up though & hang in there, good things happen to good people and it will all work out in the end! I lost a job about a year and a half ago and in hindsight, it was the BEST thing that could have happened and I'm 100,000x happier now than I've been in a LONG time! That's a plus about the beer!!! lol.

Sorry to hear, but keep looking and stay positive. I know UPS is hiring right now, not sure what your after. Check Craigslist and monster. Take sometime to relax and work on your resume. The public library ( yes they still exist) is a good place to get books on that stuff.

Well this time it wasn't the case, but that does happen. For my former employer it was a move to try and keep more people in jobs than out of them. The issue was that our stores profits were slacking for a long time, and it was putting a burden on the rest of the company. So in a last minute ditch move to pull the whole company out of chapter 11 they decided to shut down my store. I understand why they did it, it was a smart business move, it just sucks to be on the receiving end.

Northern VA is one of the more wealthy areas in the US. It took a while for us to get hit with the recession, but it happened. I know exactly where you were, i worked off of Route 50 where 28 and 50 meet.

Re: Just lost my job.

I live and work in a wealthy area of Atlanta and we felt the recession this year. The company I work for had survived a couple of em before and knew exactly when it would hit us. It worked out well for us we were able to get rid of a full time person who wasn't working out. We brought on 5 new part-time people. Deregulation in certain area's (banking) isn't a good thing, but as far as utilities and cable go it has saved a lot of money here.

Re: Just lost my job.

Deregulation only works if the market is in ideal conditions to regulate itself. This is not always the case. There needs to be a 3rd party to regulate things so it doesn't collapse upon itself. Also, over time, the market generally gravitates towards a monopoly (think Comcast) or or oligopoly (think ATT, Sprint, Verizon) and the consumer is put at a disadvantage.

While deregulation worked for you, it failed miserably in California about 10 years ago and things like Enron happens. If there is a market to rob people blind, somebody will do it. One reason why most Americans die with their retirement savings dried up from all the health care costs. Where there is money to be made, somebody will be there to take it. Regulation protects us from that without interfering too much.

Oh yeah, natural gas prices sky rocketed when it got deregulated. Which was really stupid, since all the gas still comes from AGL, you just pick from one of the 50 shell companies. Just more incentive to go total electric!
