Did you watch the coverage of katrina last year? That is all the exposure anyone in the north gets without coming down here. Between the disaster coverage and nascar coverage, they don't see the best samples of southerners.

Re: The South...

My take, and why:

First , the why:
I've worked construction now for 20 years (started really young, really!)
I have worked with many from the south who, through the union, got higher paying
jobs up here and actually, they came up here to get any job at all cuz the south is not
very big on using union labor for most of the smaller jobs... It's just that way.
The people I met from the south were probably 98% or better true gentlemen
and very polite, gracious and friendly. True pleasure to work with...
At one time I had a saying, "I'd rather have hep than help anytime!"
(That was the way my tool-partner pronounced the word "help".)

My Take:
When I actually started going south on vacation, the people were great!
Once when we were going to Florida for a couple weeks, my pos chrysler
econo-junk decided it wanted a new alternator and notified me by dimming
the lights and showing an alt. light about the time I was driving thru downtown
ATL @ 2am So we found a hotel quickly, and it was expensive as ____
but I had no choice, a wife and 2 little kids really need secure surroundings.
The next day, I got a cab and found a place to get it fixed. It was owned
by an old black man named "Fish" and I was really wishing that I'd picked up
some vaseline before I got there because these type things hurt less w/lube...
When you are stranded they can charge anything they want and you
pretty much have to pay it. I envisioned a much shorter trip due to less
available fundage. To my delight, Mr. Fish seemingly got me the alternator
at no markup and only charged me the actual install time! Good shop
rate too, the alternator & install price total was less than the hotel room!

My time in South Carolina (short but nice) was good too, the only real jerk
I met was an import from, you guessed it, up north!
If I could make the same money down there as I can here I'd be back (south) in
short order. SC had great weather, we have bad humidity in Indiana, and
while it is "home" there are other places I'd rather live. Go figure, yankee misses dixie

I understand what you mean by ununionized construction labor in the south. I used to be basically a carpenter's helper/apprentice for about 4 years. I got paid better that the rest of my friends, but my boss wasn't getting paid nearly what he could have. A guy I work with right now is probably one of the best around this area, but noone wants to pay for him besides the guy I work for...O well.

You get good and bad union guys too, but usually a well-trained but less-than-enthusiastic
worker almost always trumps an uneducated go-getter in quality, and with
minimal effort can produce more too thru knowing "what no to do". My uncle
(mom's half bro) claims to be a "carpenter" but sorry to say, I'd take a drunk
monkey if it was union trained over him! His main problem is that he has had
zero actual training or schooling IMO. :dunno: Good guy, just dumb.

I love the ignorant *****es that think we're so slow down here. I'll lead them on, act amazed to see indoor plumbing, etc, then blow them up in front of their friends. Nothing better than getting owned by someone you're making fun of for being an ignorant stupid redneck.

Yes, but some of us do it only jokingly.

Although, I really wouldn't want to live in Cali just because of the crazy emissions laws.
