I was bored and started thinking.

With the price of gas going up, and my gas mileage getting no better, could it be possible that one of the tuners out there, SCT, Diablo and others come up with a tune to deactivate cylinders while cruising like GM and Chrysler. The tuners already control ignition and fuel, and can sense transmission signals and vehicle speed. All you would need is TPS signal and hypothetically it could be done. Any thoughts?

Re: I was bored and started thinking.

i think its stupid(the whole "cylinder cut" invention)

when you cut the power of any number of cylinders, that means you have a dead cylinder(s). say you take out 2 cylinders on a V6, and during cruising the other 4 have to work harder to maintain the same efficiency of all 6.

think of it this way, how ****ty does a car run when it has a misfire or burnt valve or no compression on a cylinder. mileage not only goes down during accel, but cruise as well, due to the volumetric efficiency of the whole shibbang being skewed.

yeah the car makers might have found a way to make it work, but hell, you can drive 10mph slower and achieve the same result.

I dont think getting a good bit better milage is stupid, but if you dont obtain much more milage its a waste.

Re: I was bored and started thinking.

My opinion is, if you want gas mileage, buy a 4 cylinder.

Re: I was bored and started thinking.

We have the hightest gas prices in the nation here, and 90% of my driving is stop and go (too many people, too many cars, not enough Island). I am filling up once a week and i don't commute, every little bit helps in my eyes. I was just wondering if there was a way to do it that's all.

If I had your situation, I might consider getting a bike. Like a little crotch rocket or something...

Don't have the attention span to ride a bike, Distracted easlily! Anyway you can't lane split so i would be still sitting in traffic. Most Bike's get about 30 something miles to the gallon? I would still be filling up everyweek, even though less expensive. Also the Air Force base that I am at will not let first time riders ride anything larger than 600, and the state will not license you on anything higher than what you take the state test on, which is a 250! Kinda of sucks. The 1# reason is between the tourist drivers, Japenese drivers, Fillipino Drivers, Hawaiian drivers, Samoan drivers and all the other nations here, there is about 3 to 4 deaths a week from motor cycle accidents(plus my wife said no)

well then that cylinder cut wouldnt matter anyways, it is only used during cruise situations where the ecu realizes theres under 10% throttle input and the rpm's are aver a certain number so the motor doesnt die out or stutter.

Most bikes get better than 30...

Dad's Harley Davidson Fat Boy gets about 50. And Hogs aren't known for efficiency...
