i love teh SR71. just pure badass. crazy how the fuel tank doesnt fully seal till it heats up and expands, and the plane actually leaks raw jet fuel on the ground.

, they had those where I use to live when I was a kid, at Kadena AFB, in Okinawa, but I was so young that I don't really remember it. Nice pictures.

Now you get to see flocks of Raptors (F-22's) flying around since the first active squadrons of Raptors will be stationed at Langley

Re: A flock of Blackbirds

Museum in Seattle area has only one still paired with its experimental drone still piggybacked. Supersonic drone launched from the back of these planes....incredible!!

Re: A flock of Blackbirds

Corey did they even use the Supersonic Drone? i remember it came with the Revell Model Kit and always wondered if they even utilized it.

btw Beale AFB also had a SR71 with the Drone Attached on display a while ago last time i was there. cool sight. the low level flyby during the airshow was much more badass. i love the diamont shaped flamefronts the engines produce at full bore.

Yes, drone actually flew. Not very successfully at times, but they did fly.

Did not know Beale had the Mother/drone too. Thanks!

I have friends that served in military a various times that have said seeing a SR launch at night was a sight to behold. Never to be confused with any other plane during a night launch.

Re: A flock of Blackbirds

The D-21 Drones flew, they were Scram jets capable of mach 5++, But the launch off the SR-71 was less than Ideal and several were lost at launch. The Scram does not work below mach 3 so only the SR-71 could launch it. The D-21 is the precursor to the Aurora

Huntsville Space Center does not have a Air Force SR-71 it is a CIA A-12. To the Average American they look the same but they are not the A-12 is shorter and a wee bit faster. I have a picture of me in front of it from 2 years ago.

Re: A flock of Blackbirds

I knew about the one at HSV not being an SR71. If you go read the little display, it tells you.
