Auto AC Techs?

My dad's trying to fix the AC on his '90 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme. All he's got is the (worthless) Haynes manual for the car. He's having trouble finding the expansion valve and asked me to see if I could figure out where it is, with all my awesome internet skillz. Can anybody tell me where to tell him to look?

Re: Auto AC Techs?

The expansion valve(H-Valve)is on the passenger side against the firewall.Whats wrong with the HVAC system and what is your dad doing. In my experience that part isn't usually a problem.I hesitate to say that that car still has R12 in it.If you let any out of the system, you will have a hard time replacing it.It isn't manufactured anymore. There may still be a stockpile of it somewhere, however it is extremely expensive. You and your Dad ,may have already converted to R134A...Give me some idea of what the problem is...if it isn't fixed yet.

Re: Auto AC Techs?

The condenser has a hole in it, all the oil in the system got pushed out and it locked up the compressor. I haven't been involved in the repair at all, so I don't really know why he's looking for the expansion valve. We were talking on the phone a couple of days ago and he was *****ing about not being able to find it...so I told him I'd scour the internet for him.

Re: Auto AC Techs?

I am afraid the car will need some new freon after the condenser is replaced.Might as well bring it in for an estimate.Air is in the system and it will have to be evacuated before anything else happens.Figure that all the R12 was lost at the same time as the hole in the condenser. If he wants it fixed, now is the time to switch to R134A.Not too expensive. An additional $150 bucks.Get it serviced soon or the air in the system will eventually corrode the HVAC system ,inside out.Sorry I can't be more help.A new aftermarket condenser is roughly $200.00.I would not let this go too long before getting it repaired,to avoid complications.(?what did the expansion valve figure into this if the condenser was the issue). If I can be anymore help ...ask

Re: Auto AC Techs?

To be honest with you, I don't have a clue how the expansion valve enters into the equation. He's already replaced the compressor and he's already got the freon to fill it (it's not R12, but I don't know if it's the 134 or something else). I'll probably go by the parents' house sometime this weekend, and pops will give me the whole rundown. When he does, I'll come fill in all the blanks.
