Interesting Saturday:

My family and I went to Knoxville yesterday for the UA vs. UT game. It was a pretty good trip. The weather was awesome. The football game ended well, if you're a UT fan (sorry, Brent). Official attendance was 106,600 and change. At the beginning of the game, I wasn't real impressed with how loud it got. I've been to Bryant-Denny for several games, and it really didn't seem much, if any, louder than that. The beginning of the game didn't really go so well for UT, though, so I'm guessing that's the reason. At the end of the game, however, it was a different story. UT scored a touchdown and extra point to take the lead by 3 with just a couple of minutes left in the game. They kicked off to UA and they had to drive the field to try to tie or win the game. When UA's offense took the field, it was loud as all damnit. Here are some cellamaphone pictures:

We stopped along the way for Burger King breakfast. I tried to jack this poster off the wall, but I couldn't get it (but if somebody has one, I'll give you $10 for it):

I missed that game because I was in Dallas all day...

Did Alabama at least put up a good fight?

Re: Interesting Saturday:

That's good to hear. I think Alabama will be back where they should be next year.

UA would be making a mistake if they fire Mike Schula. Stability at the coaching position is good for a football program. Let him stay for a while and develop his recruits. It's an incredibly tough conference, and you shouldn't want to axe the guy just because he hasn't won a SEC Championship in his first four years (or whatever your measure for success is).

Exactly. IMO that is what has been wrong with Bama, they won't let a coach in there long enough to actually do any good. They expect someone to come in there and be the Bear again, but folks, THE BEAR IS DEAD!!! Stop living in the past!!

Re: Interesting Saturday:

I actually think Schula is a decent coach. Look where he's brought the team back from. The place was a **** hole when he got there.

They may not have the best team ever this year... but you have to look at what they lost last year. Not only the quarterback, but most importantly... the defense.

The defense is what made Alabama last year. If they had the defense this year that they had last year... they would be right at the top of the SEC. I think JPW is actually a better quarterback than Croyle (even if he's not as experienced).

Re: Interesting Saturday:

Shula has made a lot of horrible play calls this year.

IMO the defense is not the problem this year. Horrible Red Zone play calls are.

Look at the Arkansas game. Instead of trying to get a Touchdown they settle to kick a field goal by running play after play up the middle. They end of missing the field goal after they rely on a unreliable field kicker to win the game.

Kenneth Darby continues to start the game and continues to get shut down every single game against top 25 teams.

We seen this happen last year except it was with Brodie Croyle. Our receivers couldn't catch and Brodie was over throwing the receivers. Yet Darby was actually on top of his game last year but he was not getting the touches because Shula was wanting to put the ball into the Senior QB hands because well he is a Senior.

This year its opposite and its Darby that is the Senior and its Darby that is not producing yet Shula keeps turning to Darby when he has other options like Jimmy Johns who when he gets the ball produces.

While I do wish that Alabama could get a good coach for the long haul I don't believe Shula is a coach that will ever take Alabama to a SEC Championship game, let alone the National Championship.

Re: Interesting Saturday:

You should see the game from my viewpoint. Sidelines ftw lol.

Also, I'm willing to bet the bama msu game will be decent.

This is more what I was getting at. He might well be a great training and motivating coach, but he has made VERY bad play calls, and made mistakes with time management. Bama has axed many coaches here recently, but stability is irrelevant if the coaching is inferior in the first place. Yes, the Bear is dead, and that is what is causing a lot of the coach problems we ahve had. Everyone wants another Bear, but like n8r said, he is dead and there will not be another like him. However, I don't think that means we have to settle for inferiority
