Well, whatever color he gets, if it has a little boy bow tie then it will be slow anyhow so it won't really matter just as long as the front end is clean and pretty for those in front. :swordfigh

good point................i am still trying to weigh it out though. the ratios on the 4l60e arent as far as the ford 4r70w from 2-3. so that helps with top end. that and the fact that the autos are very close to the manuals in terms of 1/4 mile times.

the car is up at a nice price, very very well kept, no blemishes, tears, or scratches. and i am still trying to see if the ends justify the means.......if i can even get the car

You want a manual, don't compromise for the first semi-fast car you come across. Get the 6 speed if you must have an F-body.

4L60E cars are just as fast as the 6-speed ones. The biggest difference is that the 6-speed cars come with 3.42 rear gears, and the autos have either 2.73s or 3.23s.

And the 6 speeds are capable of 30 mpg with 3.73's...

That's the big advantage with the 6-speed cars. That .5 2nd overdrive is killer on the highway.

It's fun to hit 6th at about 55, the car is below idle.

No, the big advantage is the added fun of banging through the gears as well as being able to down shift to where you want when you want and not have to wait for the car to think about it or manually shift the auto.

Then the big disadvantage must be not being able to row through the gears fast enough and/or missing a gear and getting outran at the track by the guy with an auto.

No, that's the learning experience that pushes you to further yourself in life and get better and better. With about 98% of his time being spent on the streets, the track benefit would be irrelevant.

Well, if he wants a manual, for driving fun and/or experience (or whatever) then I guess he should wait. I just want to make sure that he knows that the manuals aren't going to be any faster, so that's not a good reason to dislike the automatic.

He has been about having an auto for a long time...and if he gets the auto he is going to regret it 6 months down the line and I Will have to listen to him about not having a manual again.

If he does get this car though, or a similar one with an auto, it will just give me something else to rag on him about. It has been a while since I had someone near by I could rag on about owning an F-Body...not since I moved here from NY...so it would be fun again. :yup:

i was complaining about that damn ratio between 2-3...............i know its a 3.9 and all but it just doesnt have enough oomph to pull as much as i would like it to. nothing is more aggravating than to race a GT and to stay door to door or even pull them till i hit 3rd, then they start to reel me in and creep away

yeah pounding through all the gears is going to be more fun...............but i guess its something i need to weigh out

My cobra wasn't undercoated...and it was purchased new in NY...

In fact, no cars come undercoated unless you spring for the $125 option in my neck of the woods...

Re: well looks like i might be a traitor

autos are great for those who cant drive consistently at the track.

all the cobra guys at our tracks were running consistent times within .1 difference each run (each in the mid 11 to mid 12 second ranges) with drag radials. Each Auto F-Body times were here and there, the same green one was running a low 13 one run, a mid 12 the other, a high 13, etc, etc. it was a LT1 on slicks. the one LS1 backed up into the waterbox but didnt go far enough, spun his tire for a few inches thinking he spun the whole thing and got it nice and wet in the waterbox, then pulled forward for his burnout and didnt know his tires were fully dry, and almost jumped into the guardrail.

plus to get a automatic to the point of a manual with a good driver, its gonna take a bit of work and money.

Id just opt out for a manual, automatics dont like it when you throw it in neutral and rev it and slam it into drive like you can with a manual, just engage clutch, rev and sidestep it and the rears erupt in smoke and the only thing that takes the stress is the clutch, which is ok cause its a wear item anyways.

Who in thier right mind does that with an auto anyway!?! And even with the manual, doing that aint that good. And no, the clutch isn't the only thing to feel it when you pop it out at high revs...
