Re: Windows Vista is looking pretty sweet

The IT guys have Vista running on a test machine up here at work. It is pretty neat looking, but I don't think I'll be upgrading for a long time...unless I figure out how to pirate it. I've got too many machines to be dropping $200 on each one of 'em.

Its like the familiararity (I make up words, deal with it) of Windows with the sexiness of OSX

Eh, while the aero glass is cool, its not really practical to use. you press alt+tab or something like that to bring all of them up, then you have to use the mouse wheel to scroll through them. its kinda like doing 3 steps to get the same result as looking at the bottom menu and clicking on it. my buddy had it for a while, but got rid of it cause Vista will attack programs like Nero or Alcohol120/DaemonTools. and nvidia doesnt have vista drivers for their cards yet, so you had to use some old crappy driver with no options.

I will wait for the next couple of versions where they are talking about getting smaller and smaller and removing the dead code. This resource hog doesn't look to be of much benefit to me over say linux or XP...

I'm too set in my ways. I don't like all the flashy stuff, even my XP was too flashy, so I have it set on Windows Classic.

Anyone know about tablet compatibility in Vista? Are all versions going to be compatible or do I have to wait for Vista Tablet or something of the like?

That is what I heard...so I will wait for the version that doesn't require a minicomputer to run well.

It doesn't matter how good the ram is. It can only hold 512MB of data....

true, but faster ram can load and unload that data faster.

I run 768 MB with XP and have absolutely no problem running Winamp, CS2, Azureus, AIM, Outlook and know telling how many tabs in Firefox all at the same time...

Not everyone plays Doom whatever number they are up to now.

Re: Windows Vista is looking pretty sweet

We've only got 256 on our XP machines at work. They run just fine. BustyServer down here in the basement runs XP on 256. If you're not playing games, XP is fine with 256. A whole gig doesn't hurt anything, but it's not necessary. That said, both my game rigs have 2 gigs.

Edit: and my laptop has one.

yeah, my PC here at work runs 768mb and its decent, eMachine with a 3.0ghz Intel, i can maybe have winamp and Outlook and excel running at once, try to do all three of those with FF and **** hits the fan. it makes me cry out of happiness when i get home to my PC and double click icons and they insta-open or click through my taskbar with no lag whatsoever. and in only have 1gig of DDR-400 Kingston HyperX.

BTW theyre only on Doom3. Cant wait for 4, its gonna blow anything console away, more than likely including Halo3 unless microsoft/bungee has something huge up their sleeves.

Naw, it's my old Dell P4 machine, complete with an old 3dFX PCI video card (with a whopping 4mb on the card). It runs my FEAR server. A buddy of mine built a new machine and we stripped a bunch of stuff out of it, so he just gave me what was left. I went through my junkyard and got it running on extra stuff I had lying around.

They're talking about giving us Vista on the PCs at work. It doesn't look too bad from what I've seen...

I still think I like Linux running KDE better though. That's definitely gonna be what I run on my next machine. You can't beat free and open source.

Re: Windows Vista is looking pretty sweet

ive gotten to used to XP. Ill stick with it cause i dont want to drop the coin.

I will say this, I dont know how the hell I used Win98 though. Got an old computer from my parents so my wife can have a comp to surf the net with, trying to get the network card set up....damn i cant find **** in there. I dont remember how to do anything with it....I do remember I liked 95 over 98 though.

on a side note, i installed media player 11 last night. I was wondering the all black look, but it is nice i like it. and rips in MP3 format really quick at the highest quality. I started the process of taking all cds to MP3 format....im gonna be here a week
