Re: LCD / Plasma.... Which Flat Panel is best?

I like LCD's better, but they're not as big as the plasmas. I think you might be able to get a 42" LCD. Plasmas get real big. Prices for the smaller plasmas and bigger LCDs are comperable, now.

That said, I've been thinking about getting a 720p plasma, 42". You can get 'em for less than $1000.

What are you using it for, and how big do you want?

Re: LCD / Plasma.... Which Flat Panel is best?

all i can tell you is stick to finding a nice LCD cause plasmas are honestly crap, yeah they look great right now and such but within 2 years pixels will begining dieing and thats not something you really wanna deal with when your spending good money on a flat screen

I actually had a seminar on this whole topic back when i was in car audio school and heres a little tid bit of info

LCD Flat Panels - Pros: excellent color balance, no burning, PC Monitor potentail, slim profiling, good reliability. Cons: Poor black scale, narrow off axis, pixel death, ghosting (slow video response), limited brightness

Plasma Flat Panels - Pros: Large screen size, slim profile, wall mounted Cons: DOES NOT produce full resolution for HDTV (instead its EDTV [enhanced def. TV]), can expect a year and a half of serious use before apparent loss in picture quality, poor black scale.

WTF do you think plasmas don't do full hd for? You can buy 1080p plasmas (granted, they're not cheap) and that's the highest of the high def. 720p is alot better than EDTV, too. My parent's have a little 17" LCD EDTV (or maybe 19"...), and it's definitely not anywhere near it.

are you asking why it doesnt produce full color for HD? if so Plasmas are runned on a 3 color scale.

Re: LCD / Plasma.... Which Flat Panel is best?

there was a 32" LCD HD Ready screen at BB for 550ish, looked awesome one night, there was a crowd around the cheap ones cause they looked better than the larger plasmas.

the next day, they had done something to the resolutions because all the cheap ones had horrid quality, and all the expensive ones looked better. Must be their way of controlling sales, divert attention to the expensive things by using trickery. I only trust what i see if i see the setup in someones house, i never trusted store displays and i definately dont now. I almost called out the guy on it.

We are discussing it for the living room... GameCube/Wii, Tv, Movies and I want to be able to hook the computer up and watch stuff on it from the Comp...

Haven't given the new technology a second thought in almost a decade, so I have no clue what's good and bad..

All the online stuff would lead me towards Plasma, but you guys are leaning towards LCD?!

Re: LCD / Plasma.... Which Flat Panel is best?

I like LCDs, good quality stuff that truly lasts. And yes you can get a 40-42" LCD tv.

Plasmas are nice, but unlike blue said, they do eventully start going out. The pixels dont just die after a year or two. Most go to 60,000 or about (yes 60 thousand) hours and lose half its brightness. So it just wont be as bright. Not pixels start dieing. So in about 7 years after you buy the TV it will be half as bright.

price wise, they are both becoming fairly inexpensive. Price has dropped drastically.

from newegg you can get a panasonic 42" plasma for $1100
and a Samsung 40" LCD $1400

Re: LCD / Plasma.... Which Flat Panel is best?

We ran out to BB, CC, BJ's and CompUSA..

Either the Samsung LN-S4051D or the Vizio L42..

One is a 40" LCD HDTV, the other is a 42" LCD HDTV. The biggest issue I have with Vizio is the mass marketing campaign they've put on the past months. Is their product any good, or did they just spend $5M to get the name out there..

Re: LCD / Plasma.... Which Flat Panel is best?

if you're going the LCD route, i'd recommend something from toshiba's line. they have full 1080p HD resolution (for 40-50 inches, below 40" it's 720p) i've seen them in action and for the price they're a very nice buy. good quality picture too

if you want to be wowed by picture and have money to spend, get something from samsung's DLP line. let me just say.. wow

That's good to hear. I'm hoping to buy one as soon as I get my tax return and all my furniture paid off, which should be right around the same time.
