Computer on a box:

After the little computer died, I did some troubleshooting. Guessed it might be a bad motherboard so I ordered an "Open Box" mobo from Newegg. To make everything easy to work on, I set it all up the motherboard box. Makes 'em real easy to work on. One day, in the next few weeks, I'll put it back in the case and hook up the watercooling. I had to have it running for the lan party I'm hoping will happen this weekend.

This is also an excuse to play with my new camera...

Re: Computer on a box:

Instead of putting it back into the case, build it into an empty budlight case or something. Or better yet, get a pony keg, drink it, and make it into a case. You get beer, and the coolest computer case ever that way.

Re: Computer on a box:

actually it prolly runs hotter. the case when set up right with intake and exhaust fans, promotes airflow through and over the mobo and out the back. without proper airflow, the heat from the cpu just builds up around it, same as the gpu and ram.

i have (1) 120mm intake fan up front, (2) 60mm fans on the side (one blows onto the video card, one blows onto the processor into the cpu heatsink fan assembly), and two in the rear exhaust fan locations, plus a 120mm selectable speed exhaust fan inside the power supply. With full resolutions on Quake4 and all the fans on, the exhaust is pretty hot, id hate to imagine what it would be like if that heat couldnt be moved around and just sat and built up.
