Question Will be getting a dog in the next month

Was wondering what kind of dogs you like and would suggest. I've grown up around labs, german shepards, collies, chows and a few mix's of those. Today we went looking just to see what the local pound had. They had one that I fell in love with. It was a 3 months old american bulldog. I wanted to take it home. It was mostly black with some white. I held the pup and it almost instantly put its head on my shoulder and started to fall asleep. I didn't want to leave without it lol really sweet puppy. Anyway so now i'm highly considering an american bulldog. I've done some research on them and they will do okay in an apartment. Which is another thing I will be in an apartment for the next year. After that i'll be either renting or buying a house. So suggest some other breeds that you think would be worth getting.

I want a dog that is affection, obedient, loyal and friendly, but would also be a good guard dog.

American bulldogs are big loveable dogs that do very well for protection. They are territorial and very intimidating to other people.

labs are great dogs... loyal, obedient, smart, and very family oriented (they can be bad as puppies.. very very playful). their only flaw is that they have a better chance of licking the intruder to death than defending the house.

I wouldnt go that far.... your dog was an unfortunate experience. I got mine from the pound and she's easily the greatest dog I've ever been around. Shes a black lab/retriever mix. Shes loves attention, is super smart, she's obediant, she loves every second you spend with her, wants to be around you, feels safe around me... god i could keep going on. She's the best dog I could have asked for and she came from the pound... Id def not relieve the idea of getting a pup from the local shelter/pound.

Re: Will be getting a dog in the next month

If you want an awesome dog you'll love and take into the family, but also a dog that's incredibly smart, loyal, loving, a good guard dog if taught well, I recommend an Australian Shepherd.

USASA Australian Shepherd Home Page

There's the website, and here's some vids of my Australian Shepherd puppies

First day we got them: [MEDIA]

Re: Will be getting a dog in the next month

You active enough to handle a shepard's dog?

You said you would be in an apartment so I dunno how much room you have or time to go outside but Border Collies are the greatest dogs if you like an active pup.

I have never known a lazy one and they always love to fetch. My experiences are that they are ignorant when they're young, but as they gow older they are more loyal than your left hand. They're mid sized, hairy, and very smart.

Also, Golden Retrievers are always nice dogs that love to be pet.How big is too big is the question though.

Re: Will be getting a dog in the next month

I'd have time to go outside with the dog every day. I work splits and even on full days I can go out with the dog after work. Thats actually another reason I want a dog is someone to go walking with to get into better shape.

we have had good success with training shelties and used to breed them. Really smart, and friendly. VERY protective of anyone/anything of the household. Great gaurd dogs and great pets. Very easy to train.
