Things to look out for when looking at 5.0's

Alright, my v6 is up for sale, and i plan on getting a fox body 5.0. I need to know some key things that could cause me some trouble when i'm looking at cars to buy. If anyone has recent experience with this, any help would be appreciated :thumb2:

Look for low miles, other than that, dunno, maybe one that already has some of the mods you would like to have on it??

you can get modded foxes on ebay with all the bolt ons for around $5-6000. look for good paint, no rust, look under the car to make sure the floor boards aren't rotted out, tranny shifts smooth, straight frame.

get a magnet.

look at the miles

inspect the engine, if the odometer says 20,000, it could be 120,000, Fox Body Odometers roll over at 100K

Look for rust, mine had NONE, theres a 93 cobra at a local burger king that is a rusted piece of **** though, 3 years newer than mine.. (its sad)

Get a roller and go under the car.

Check the records, make sure it's been taken care of properly.

Other than that.. I guess everything is common sense. Good luck.

open and close everything, doors, hatch/trunk, hood and look at the body panel gaps, the Fox's are rather flexable chassis, and when abused, they can be tweaked rather easily

other than that, look at the normal stuff, see if it smokes, check the oil, coolant ect.

BTW, Fox Body stangs could easily have over 200,000 miles, on older ones maybe 300.000 miles or more, so do be careful of what you are buying there.

Look under the car, and engine, and hoses. Look to see if they are dry.
aka look for any leaks of oil or anything near gaskets ect.

If you buy a car that the previous owner says has a "rebuilt" engine, find out who did the engine work, talk to them if possible, fine out what was done. If the current owner has receipts, ask to see those. How many miles since the rebuild?

a buddy of mine has a 87 Cougar XR7 with about 300,000 miles, so even some later fox bodies could have that much

Hehe, wonder if anyone has made it to a million miles with an sn95 yet?? Wonder if it will go back to 000000? And what of a digital 99+, will it register over 1,000,000 miles?

There was old fellow who used to buy some parts from us at our junk yard who had an Olds he swore had over 500,000 on it, not sure what model it was, late 60s early 70s I think. He had it painted and then I heard he wrecked it and tore it up.

probably at least 226K, could easily be 326k or 426k, even 526k or more on that old car man. Of course everything on it has probably been replaced a half dozen times too.
