Smile My $650 project boat thread.

Figured Id start a thread about that boat I bought so you all can watch my progress on it as I work on her and fix her up. Ill update it as I do **** and ask for advice.. anything you guys want to throw out there for idea's on what I could do for some aspect of it, go ahead and throw that out there... suggestions are very much appreciated.

So far All I've basically done is actually buy the boat, and started trying to diagnose problems with it. The engine supposedly runs fine but it's been way too cold to start it up yet to make sure nothing freezes inside the cooling system. When I bought it the thing had about 60 beer cans and about 6-8" worth of ice on the floor all throughout. I've gotten all the ice out and started cleaning the floor up, getting all the leaves and beer cans out of there, that sort of thing. I've found a few soft spots in the floor but nothing to be really concerned about.

Here are the pictures the guy sent me before I went and looked at the boat, so this is what I had to work with:

Once I got ahold of it I started cleaning it out, so now theres a LOT fewer leaves/trash in it and I can actually move around in there. Once the carpet dries out Ill take a shop vac to it and get ALL the crap up, but its much better now.

2/25/07 Update

Today I decided I wanted to get the rear seats fixed up. Went and bought some new vinyl for $3.44, some foam for 20 bucks, and some plywood for 14.99. Spent about 40 bucks and have 2 new seats out of the deal. Here's what it looked like before (basically no seat):

After about 30 minutes worth of cutting wood, cutting foam, and stapling vinyl, it looked like this:

Also here you can see the storage area in the hull for ski's and whatever else... its still filthy cause all the ice that was in there finally melted. I found 2 1/2 pairs of ski's in there

Also in that rear seat picture you can see theres a hole cut for a 10" sub, and all the wiring is actually still all run through the boat. Ill eventually put a sub in there and an amp under the seat along with some new 6.5" speakers and a head unit. The head unit goes in the little glove box thingy thats also still filthy, but here it is:

Then, here's the motor right now. Needs a good cleaning then she'll be lookin good.

Thats about it for now.

If that thing has no major hull problems you got a major steal. Hell that trailer is worth a pretty penny by its self.

Re: My $650 project boat thread.

No hull problems, engine "runs fine" last time it was started... only problem is what I think to be a prop hub being spun, which, if thats the case its a 50 dollar fix and I have a lake ready boat

if it is its the worst sound evar. youll try to get above a certain speed and youll hear what sounds like when you grind a gear in a car, but 10x louder and with ours it was an outboard, so the entire engine shook and tried to come off its mounts, freaked us out everytime.

Well I never actually got to put it in the water and listen for anything weird. Its either the prop hub, something with the driveshaft, something with the outdrive, or engine coupler. Im starting at the cheap/easy **** and hoping for the best.

id replace the prop either way. once you take off the prop one of the ways to check if i recall, was if the spindle part was out-of-round where it connects to the propeller part.

Got some more **** done today, Ill have to take some pictures tomorrow cause its dark now, but basically I took out the seats in the bow cause they needed to be recovered. Well, while they were out I had this idea of just making a solid platform over the entire front as a sort of "sun deck" since I wanted one, but didnt want to do it out back because it would make it hard to access the motor. Well, a home depot trip and about 2 1/2 hours later The entire bow is a nice little deck that you can lay in. It also gave me some area for storage where your feet used to go since this boat lacked storage space, so this will give me a place to stow life jackets and such. Tomorrow Ill probably put a door in the opening and cover that with vinyl to make it look uniform, then have some sort of latch and handle on it. Eh **** it, ill go take a pic with the flash.

I also hooked the battery up, tested the electrical stuff and it looks to be in working order. The only guage that doesnt seem to work is the trim guage, but oh well. BRB with pictures

Re: My $650 project boat thread.

Ok here we go...

Here's the bow if you're looking at it from the front of the boat:

Here it is while inside the boat looking towards the front:

Here's the storage area that is the result of the sun deck. This is what Ill be making a door to cover.

Then here's a couple other pictures of the boat... the top is off so you can see its lines better. Its got a pretty sleek, low profile look IMO:

More to come tomorrow

Re: My $650 project boat thread.

Little update guys....

After finding out I needed to rebuild the top half of the outdrive, that has been done, I replaced all the bellows (What a pain in the freakin ***), and am about to put the outdrive back on once I go get a gasket for it tomorrow.

When I wasnt able to work on the drive for whatever reason, I've been installing a stereo in it. It currently has a cheap-o tape deck in it with an aux input for my ipod, then I bought a 5 channel amp to power the 4 speakers and 1 10" sub. On top of that, I bought a second self contained kenwood sub/amp thinger and have put that in as well. So it has a completely amped stereo system running 2 10" subs.... and it gets loud

After this I have to get the thing off the trailer about 6" to repair a part of the hull... so any advice on how to do that would be nice. Its almost done...

I dont have any new pictures, but Im hoping to actually fire the thing up tomorrow and see how she runs! Im gettin' excited.

good luck with that. maybe you can find the center of gravity for the entire hull and lift the whole boat up with a jack and some towels between the hull/jack so it doesnt damage the hull :dunno: or maybe lift one side at a time with a jack. jesus i have no idea, in a drunken state of mine i cant think of anything that would help. but yeah, id use some jacks and a garage and lift the boat off the trailer somehow.

Boats coming back together...

Upper half of the out drive was rebuilt and I put it back on yesterday. I started it up for the first time... cranked for a while before it finally turned over but it did start. Unfortunately theres a freeze plug that popped thats just behind a motor mount, so I have to take the motor mount off to get to the damn thing. Oh well, more fun!
