End of one of the worst days ever:

This is about a novel, but I had to let it all out:

Those of you who know me, probably know that I spent this past weekend in Boston. It's always a good time, and this trip was no exception. Unfortunately, today probably made up for all of it. And then some.

It all started this morning when I got up and left the hotel for the subway to get to the airport. This is Boston Commons as I saw it this morning just before entering the subway:

Unfortunately, the cell phone camera doesn't do a very good job of capturing the huge flakes of snow that were falling from the sky. I didn't really think it was a big deal, at this point, since Boston is used to this sort of ****, right?

When I got to the airport, I found my gate. Out the window you could see people deicing planes sitting on the tarmac:

My plane still listed as on schedule, so I used my extra time to go hunt down a slice of Sabarro pizza for breakfast. I was back at the gate with a few minutes to spare before they made the call to start boarding. We loaded up the plane and sat on the tarmac for a while. After probably 30 minutes, the pilot called over the intercom that we were waiting to be deiced.
Other planes waiting to be deiced:

At this point, I'm starting to feel pretty good about having a two hour layover in Memphis, 'cause I might need it. Another 30 minutes, or so, go by and the deicer guys come over and hose us down with antifreeze, or whatever. We sit for a while more and taxi out toward the runway. We sit, we taxi, we sit, we taxi, we sit, we taxi, then we pull onto the runway. Then we pull off the runway. The pilot comes back over the intercom and tells us that it's taken us too long to take off, and we've got to be deiced again. So we pull back around to the terminals. At this point it's becoming painfully clear that I'm not going to make my connecting flight in Memphis. They pop open the door and airline people come and go. So I ask the flight attendant if I can just get off the plane and try this all tomorrow. He tells me that he can't keep me on the plane, so if I want to get off, I can. I tell him that I'm going to call customer service and make sure I can get a flight out tomorrow, and if I can, I'm going to just try again then. He says okay, and I call customer service. It takes me a few tries to get through, but I get everything set up for tomorrow. I get up and start to disembark, and they've closed the door. Flight attendant tells me, it's too late, we closed the door.

:cussing:

So here I am, stuck on a plane to Memphis. An airport where there's not going to be a connecting flight waiting on me when I get there.

:cussing:

So I sit for the three and a half hours it takes to fly from BOS to MEM, land, and start hunting for Northwest employees that can help me figure out what to do. Eventually I find a desk with NW employees manning it. They tell me that I'm on a 3rd party connecting flight, and I'll have to go to some other place to get it sorted out. I find that desk. The woman there tells me there's another flight to Huntsville at 7:40, but it's full. She then tells me that I'm booked on the 2:30 flight the following afternoon. At this point, I'm so mad I can't even talk. Full words won't come out of my mouth. I'm hyperventilating and afraid I might just have a full on breakdown. I just turned and walked away (the real reason they don't let you have knives or guns in the terminals is readily apparent at this point...). My mom calls me, but I can't really talk to her, either.

Eventually, I calm down a little. I find the exit to the airport, jump on a Hertz shuttle bus, and man the smallest plane out of Memphis I can find:

So I drive the 3-4 hours back to Decatur from Memphis in a Kia Spectra. The seats are way uncomfortable for such a long drive, but I think it got almost 40 mpg over the trip. I forgot to set the tripmeter when I left, so I'm not entirely certain...but that's a ballpark estimate.

I got to my parents' house, mom followed me out to drop off the rental, and I jumped in the TA to drive the last leg of a horrendous journey. They had parked the car in their garage, which is also my dad's workshop. It appears that six dozen cats were also locked in the garage because the car was completely covered in footprints, sawdust, and cat hair. No biggie. I'll swing it by the "touchless" car wash right up the road from the house on my way home. I'm sitting there, sudsing up, and I feel a weird shudder in the car. It happened probably twice while the windshield was all sudsy and I couldn't see anything. While I'm being rinsed, though, I figure out what's going on. the arm that runs in front of the car is catching on the very front bottom of the bumper. It cut a pretty deep scratch across the front of the car.

I've noticed even here in Buffalo this year, they are canceling and delaying flights all the time over just about nothing anymore. It's pretty damn annoying.

Sucks when everything goes wrong in one day, but it's better to get it all over with for a while in one day than spread it

Re: End of one of the worst days ever:

I went back to the car wash and got the phone number. It's just a pager number, unfortunately, so I left them my cell phone number. Hopefully they'll call me back. Either way, this is a good excuse to take care of the countless rock chips on the front fascia from countless interstate miles.

I didn't even notice that, lol.

Edit: And yes, it would be the most action The Black Car has ever seen. I've never hooked it up in The Black Car. In the Oldsmobile, yes. In the TA, no.

No. I have dispatched a complaint with Northwest, but nothing has come of it, thus far.

On behalf of everyone at Northwest Airlines and our affiliate carrier, Pinnacle Airlines, we sincerely regret the inconvenience caused by the delay of Flight 5737. We also regret your disappointment with the alternate flight provided for you in
Memphis, and understand how very frustrating this experience must have been.

We know our customers need an airline they can count on and we recognize how disturbing it is when plans are disrupted. We too would have preferred to transport you to your final destination precisely on schedule. It is what you expected and it is what we wanted to provide. While weather conditions will continue to be a fact of life for us, we strive to provide the best possible service when irregularities occur.

In all cases, we will make every effort to confirm passengers on our next available flight. However, please keep in mind that due to schedule constraints, the next available flight may be several hours later or even the following day. Again, we regret your disappointment.

Since you did not utilize the last segment of your ticket, I have forwarded a copy of your correspondence to my colleagues in Passenger Refunds. After their review, they will reply to you directly. You will be hearing from them either via email or U.S. mail. If an adjustment is due, the following events will occur.

- For cash or check payments, a check will be mailed from our accounting department approximately 20 days after processing.
- Credit card refunds will be electronically processed to the original form of payment.
- For tickets purchased from KLM or outside of North America, the processing time will take longer. If this is the case, we appreciate your patience.

A refund status can be checked online at Northwest Airlines nwa.com - Products & Services - Ticket Services - Refunds or you may contact our Passenger Refunds Department directly at 612-726-2422.

Thank you again for taking the time to write to us, Mr. Winchester. We appreciate the opportunity to respond and hope to welcome you onboard a future Northwest flight.

Sincerely,

Charlotte Opland

Just remember: The day after the worst day ever, by definition, cannot be the worst day ever. However, it can still be one of the worst days ever. Just not the worst day ever. Because that, my friend, would be a contradiction. And anyone who makes a contradiction is obviously gonna be have a bad day, if not one of the worst days ever.
