Hold up what? Rap Music Declining?

Quote:
Maybe it was the umpteenth coke-dealing anthem or soft-porn music video. Perhaps it was the preening antics that some call reminiscent of Stepin Fetchit.

The turning point is hard to pinpoint. But after 30 years of growing popularity, rap music is now struggling with an alarming sales decline and growing criticism from within about the culture's negative effect on society.

Rap insider Chuck Creekmur, who runs the leading Web site Allhiphop.com, says he got a message from a friend recently "asking me to hook her up with some Red Hot Chili Peppers because she said she's through with rap. A lot of people are sick of rap ... the negativity is just over the top now."
One could only hope. All rap is now is the same crap over and over again. What little creativity existed in the 90's the beginning of the new century is gone.

Re: Hold up what? Rap Music Declining?

Rap is a ton better than rock...but when I say rap, I do not mean the BS coming out the speakers these days...I mean late 80s...early 90s. LL Cool J, Run DMC, Tu Pac, Beastie Boys before they went nuts, Tone Loc, Kid n Play, Doug E Fresh, Slick Rick, etc, etc, etc....the good stuff.

Today, it is the same cookie cutter BS...nothing new, nothing creative, nothing interesting. Back in the day, you didn't know what you would get. Rappin Duke, Roxanne Roxanne, Mr. goodbar, etc...today, it is *****es and hoes and money and dubs. Same ****, different song.

Re: Hold up what? Rap Music Declining?

thank god. now we can listen to REAL musicians again... wait i take that back.

ill stick to listening to everything pre year 2000 besides maybe a handful of bands (audioslave, jet, coheed, and maybe some of those indie bands like modest mouse, bloc party and franz ferdinand).

honestly, i dont mind rap... but its a lot worse than what it was. i mean.. chain hang low.. laffy taffy... has it really devolved itself that much? give me notorious, tupac, dmx or bone thugs over these new guys anyday.

speaking of devolvement, have you heard that new one, "Chicken Noodle Soup" ?

I think it's pretty much over when you make a song that says nothing but 'chicken noodle soup' over and over again.

argh.

im pretty sure most if not all of those bands you just mentioned were post y2k.

but yeah, the pop rap today is garbage. its sad they can make a club hit out of repeating two words and putting their ignorant spin on it.

i still listen to eminem, dre, nwa, tupac, biggie/puff daddy/mase (before he turned gay and changed his name everyday), Bone Thugs (prolly one of my favorites), and older **** like that. basically rap from the 90's.

For a rapper...he sure as hell can't rap in rhythme with the damn music...it is like he is freestyling over something just playing on the radio completely unrelated to anything. Song sucks ***.

Slim actually isn't too bad...he is smooth and I live on that song Kim....man, it really calms my nerves sometimes.

Well, its pretty much a 3 way tie for crappiest to me, I listen to all of those equally as little, as in only when I am riding in someone else's car.

Re: Hold up what? Rap Music Declining?

I'm going to write a rap song in 1 minute, here it is.

Hos, hos, and hos
gold chains
dubs
AK47, glocks, mac 10
*****es
endo, crack, and chronic
murder my fellow black man
more *****es and hos
and spell out my name M-C-D-U-M-B-S-H-I-T

There, I just summed up the entire rap collection from A-Z. Where's my million?

Re: Hold up what? Rap Music Declining?

Meh its alot easier to buy mixtapes and burned cds then teh real thing esp around here

My take on it is im not shocked at all theres no-one thats taking the rap game by the balls anymore. This is why im advocate of mixtapes songs you'll never hear on the radio that are pretty damn badass.

Anywho Chicken Noodle Soup is far from new **** came out in the end of May last year.

Second if you hate rap now then check out some of these artists that really dont rap about ho's or cars or that lifestyle but can rap like Aesop Rock, Atomsphere, Jedi Mind Tricks, Techn9ne, Sage Francis, NonProphets, Deltron 3030 (my person fav band seriously they can prolly out rap majority of the industry today)

Plenty of others.

BTW I like Rap and Rock equally

They? Tech N9ne is a single person...with an entourage. I will have to check for a new cd though...haven't looked into it in a while since there was no talk of anything new from him.

Now...he was producing a bunch of stuff for other people...but nothing on his own. I will have to check is site now.

EDIT: Upon further review...it appears he has snuck 2 CDs out on me since the last time I was on his site. Nice...can update my library now.

The only reason rap is the same is because thats what sells, people won't get signed for 'spitting' anything but *****es and hos, rims, bling bling, whips, ak's, and chronic. The only reason it is all the same is because major labels only sign the gangsta type street **** knowing for a fact thats what sells.. they will find they are beating a dead horse eventually and a whole new type of rap will come along. Word.

its obviously not selling anymore. thats what the article is saying.

if i had to predict trends i can see some type of 80s type thing with techno type stuff goin on and then back to rock and then rap. its probably way off but music trends tend to cycle.

I almost hate to see rock go any more mainstream than it already is. It really pains me to hear teenage girls singing along to "The Pot" after hearing it on the radio a couple of times.

At least stuff like most rap and pop are worthless to begin with.
