new tower in... component location help needed

Newegg.com - G.SKILL 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory - Retail
Newegg.com - Western Digital Raptor 150GB 3.5" Serial ATA150 Hard Drive - OEM
Quad Blue LED 80mm Fan
Xoxide X-Purity Case - LCD Edition

So I suppose it's a good start. I still need the MoBo, Processor, Video Card, and Power Supply. But I was wondering, is 550 Watt for the power supply going to be enough? There are some pretty heavy duty things on here that need power. Should I be looking for more power?

Also, I believe these are the Video Card, Processor and MoBo I'll be probably be getting... unless someone has further input?
Newegg.com - EVGA GeForce 8800GTS 640-P2-N821-AR HDCP Video Card - Retail
Newegg.com - Intel Core 2 Duo E6400 2.13GHz LGA 775 Processor - Retail
Newegg.com - ASUS P5B Deluxe ATX Intel Motherboard - Retail

Decided to pick this up a little later, as it's easy to add these later.
Newegg.com - Seagate Barracuda 7200.9 120GB 3.5" SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive - OEM (times 2)
I'm still undecided about the power supply. I don't want to get a cheap one because that's one of the more important areas of the computer.. if the stuff isn't drawing the power it needs, it isn't going to function properly. Thanks for any further input you guys can give me.

Re: so, parts I've picked up so far for the new tower

yeah but he wont have to upgrade for a long time, the 8800GT supports directx10, vista and whatever shaders(the name escapes me now).

plus he can always add a second card later on.

Re: so, parts I've picked up so far for the new tower

also, I want the tower to put up good graphics on a 43" LCD HDTV... so a decent graphics card is needed. Also, what other accessory drives will I need? I'm thinking a CDRW/DVD drive (capable of burning a CD, but mainly for reading them at a high rate of speed), then at least one CD/DVD writable drive... possibly two. Also, I need USB ports. I'll need at least 4, and the ethernet thing is a must. Where do I get all this stuff? (I saw the CD/DVD drives at Newegg)

Re: so, parts I've picked up so far for the new tower

An integrated graphics card can "put up good graphics" on any display, if you're just talking about windows crap. If you don't game, you don't need a graphics card. Period.

Re: so, parts I've picked up so far for the new tower

yeah, but I do research on enzymes, and it's important to be able to see their 3D structures, and some of those can be extremely complicated... in fact, my laptop wouldn't pull up about 1/2 of them.

Re: so, parts I've picked up so far for the new tower

ok, so the tower case came in. Along with the fans. Now, I have all the fans attached (it came with 2 in it.. so I have 3 left over). Now, I'm just wondering where the components go, or will go. I had bought some stuff, but NewEgg didn't want to ship it to my new address, so I will have to use my other check card after I swap money to the different account. Anyway...

5.25” External: 4
3.5” External: 2
3.5” Internal: 4
Expansion Slots: 7

On the 5.25" Externals... I know for sure the top one will be a CD/DVD ROM drive, and the 2nd I want to be CD/DVD writable. On the back, I have 6 free expansion slots. so, what should I put in the other slots? I don't really have a use for floppy discs... I don't think yet anyway (we do have some photometers that take floppies, so eventually I might need them for research). I would love to get this really going... so any suggestions would be awesome. I'm not sure where I put the processor or the mother board, or video card or any of that stuff, there are some nice mounts on the side of the tower, but all of them wouldn't go on one side. Anyway, yeah, people with more knowledge than me... I need your help for future problems. Thanks guys. (First tower being built)

Re: so, parts I've picked up so far for the new tower

well your 5" drive bays will be taken by any cd/dvd drive. some of the 3.5" bays also have openings to the outside world, usually those will be either peripheral controls (fan controls, temp gauges, etc), floppy or media drives. the rest will hold your hard drives. honestly i wouldnt even worry about it, mounting drives is prolly the easiest part, once you figure out how you want to run the cables/arrays (if there are any) youll be set. attaching everything is the easiest and funnest part of the build.

Re: so, parts I've picked up so far for the new tower

you dont *have* to use all the slots/bays.........

btw which power supply did you end up getting? some have a controller to control a secondary fan inside the supply and a temperature gauge that takes up the space of a 3.5" drive.

if youre gonna run neonz/fans you can get a control hub for them that fits in a 5" bay, you can control like 16 accessories at a time.

just look on newegg or xoxide for accessories.

no, do not remove the tab unless you plan on using that bay externally. if you put a hard drive there and its also an external use bay, i think that tab can stay. youll see once everything comes in how it all fits together.

Re: so, parts I've picked up so far for the new tower

so, what components do I need in before I can get the lights to come on at all? I just want some clue that I've gotten it wired ok so far. Also, what about fans coming on? Is that all mother board dependant?

Re: so, parts I've picked up so far for the new tower

you can hook all the fan power plugs up to the power supply in a series and they will all come on with the computer, or you can buy a control module for any molex (4pin connector) accessory like i have. I have 4 buttons, one for my 120mm front fan, one for my two 80mm side fans AND the cathode control module (which turns on all 4 of my neons), and one button for my rear 80mm red exhaust fan and another button for my rear blue exhuast fan. theyre also variable knobs so i can control how much juice they get, the more juice, the brighter and faster they spin, though i usually have them off or on and at full.

these parts MUST be installed before turning on the PC:
Power Supply (duh)
Motherboard and processor
Ram
Video card (if the mobo does not have an onboard graphics card, which it prolly doesnt)
Hard Drive
Peripheral Drives (CD/DVD or floppies)

thats the barebones you need to turn it on and get windows installed and whatnot. later on you can add all the USB/Firewire connections onto the mobo (which will take some reading up on the motherboards manual as to where what connectors go where, it can get tricky but its no molecular biology)

Re: so, parts I've picked up so far for the new tower

sweet, and I thought Molecular Bio was easy. This will probably be something I do in my spare time anyway, so we'll see what I can do about getting together all those pieces over break or something... perhaps I get some of them. I will probably start by buying the MoBo since I need something to link everything else into.

also, it has a 500 W power supply with it... will that work for now? I don't plan on gaming with it until it's all the way finished... mainly just doing excel and **** on it now. So will it be sufficient?

Re: so, parts I've picked up so far for the new tower

^500W is good for most things.. if you're gonna be extremely hardcore (gaming or intense graphics processing [dual cards]) then you might want to step up to 750W, but it doesn't sound like you need anything that large

i do have to recommend a modular power supply. that way you only have to have the few cables you'll actually use inside the case. xoxide.com should have a few

Just letting you know that the quad core processors are going to take over the dual core processors this summer (they're starting to hit the market right now actually). I'd hold off on buying a system for a few more months....... but that's just me.

I hope it's better than their dual core was because Intel kicked the crap out of AMD with those.

It's going to be. [H] Enthusiast -

I have a AMD Anthlon XP x2 3800 and love it. It does everything I need it to. It blazes through video encoding which I do a ton of and dbpoweramp supports multithreading which allows me to convert two mp3s at once.

It was over a hundred dollars cheaper than a Core 2 Duo too.

Wow. Looks like they spent their time on the quads and knew the duals would just be a passing thing.
