Amputee runners:

Wired 15.03: Blade Runner

Pretty neat article over at Wired.

Do you think runners with prosthetic legs should be allowed in the Olympics?

Re: Amputee runners:

depends. if it doesnt give them an edge.. yes. but i could imagine that prosthetic legs someday could make people jump 20 yards high and run 40mph.

Re: Amputee runners:

With the way they work technology, it would be hard to say what is and isn't an advantage...people would push the envelope to gain the edge...and it would be hard to stay on top of it in a preventative manner.

So, no...they shouldn't be able to be in the olympics...at least, not against non-robotic people.

Re: Amputee runners:

Nope, they should not. They also have less weight for the races/jumps which would give them an advantage. And i am sure in the future they will make things that will do the work for them as others have said.

Re: Amputee runners:

I'll have to agree that they should not.

Regular runners have to deal with the stress on their feet, caves, and thighs. They only have to worry about thighs. I don't think it's fair, and I know I have no right to say what's fair in life because I still have 2 legs but this is my own opinion.

Re: Amputee runners:

well seeing the legs they use for running, no. they are basically springs. i remember a while back they did a comparison of the guy with the springy style running legs versus a normal marathon runner, and the amputee ran the standing mile like 20 seconds faster. plus he was less tired because he had 15% less muscles to work during the same distance a normal runner had.

i think its awesome what they can do, but while its a disadvantage in everyday life most the times, if they use the correct prosthetic limbs for the right situation (like one designed for a sprint) they can be quite the advantage.
