Digital Rights Management. It helps them protect copyrights on digital media.

well, they THINK it helps protect. but in reality just makes it slightly more difficult for people to obtain free music.

Re: DRM Free Music On The Horizon

^not to mention that no CD on the market contains DRM... it's ONLY online music stores that use it

so basically, if you resorted to the old school 5 finger discount to get your cds, you could load DRM free music onto the interweb

Re: DRM Free Music On The Horizon

Here is the iTunes article: Apple Unveils Higher Quality DRM-Free Music on the iTunes Store

All of EMI's music will be DRM free in May I can't wait. I can actually download high quality music now and do what I want with it.

Re: DRM Free Music On The Horizon

because the quality of P2P music is hit or miss on top of some songs being hard to find.

Re: DRM Free Music On The Horizon

I know nothing about this of course, but some guy once told me that the quality of bit torrents are usually pretty awesome. Like 256-320 kbps, or even FLAC. Plus you can get the whole CD in the time it takes you to download a couple of songs from a P2P network.

That's just what I heard.

Re: DRM Free Music On The Horizon

is there really that much of a difference in DRM and non DRM music quality. i don't mean to sound stupid, but i either never noticed a difference or never knew there really was one.

thats what i do, i think most the mp3's ive gotten are a minimum of 192kbps, which is around the norm. p2p died out when WinMX died, now i just get the whole album through a torrent in about a minute if its a newer cd and theres alot of seeders.

Re: DRM Free Music On The Horizon

yeah now i hear they just increased royalties so all the internet radio stations are in jeopardy of shutting down. win one battle, lose another.

so you cant listen to am/fm radio, its all spanish. you cant listen to internet radio, it got shut down due to the industry raising royalty prices. you have to pay monthly for satellite radio, and it still isnt that good. and yet these companies are still wondering why downloading music grows more everyday?

Re: DRM Free Music On The Horizon

PSU gets napster for free. you can download the files for free but you can't burn them. the way around this is a program called tunebite which plays a song and records it into an mp3 directly off your soundcard.
