Hey computer guys, looking for something and need some help.

I setup wireless in my new house, and its fine and dandy, BUT, my music is all on an external harddrive. Is there an adapter (similar to a print server, I imagine) that will allow me to turn my USB harddrive into a network drive without putting the HDD into a new box w/ an ethernet port on it? I am looking for the cheapest solution possible. If I can't find anything for real cheap, I am just gonna find an old computer laying around my parents house, plug my external into that, and share it on the network. Ideas? Suggestions? Pointless comments?

You're not going to be able to just hook a hard drive up to an ethernet port and share it on a network. A hard drive with no network card does not a computer on a network make. Or something like that.

You're going to have to plug the external HDD into a machine and share it on the network through that.

Mr. Bunt speaks the truth. Just plug it into a machine and turn on sharing for the drive.

yep, in order to communicate on a network, a device needs a NIC and physical address

So how does a USB print server work on a printer thats not designed to be a network printer? I'm not trying to be a smart ***, just curious, I don't know a whole lot about networking - just the basics?

A print server has all the necessary electronics inside that it can communicate with a TCP/IP network on one side, and a USB printer on the other. It's just like a computer, to the network. You can get a NAS (Network Accessable Storage) that acts just like what you're talking about wanting to do...but you can't just get an adapter to do it.
