Energy Drinks. Are they bad?

So I get home tonight, and pull a SoBe No Fear out of the fridge and my dads starts freaking out. He goes on this big rant about this news story that ran saying how it sped up your heart, and was full of "man-made sugars"...unlike his cup of brewed coffee. Now, I started this drink three hours ago, and I still have a quarter of this 16 ounce beverage left. I have never really 'felt' anything from these drinks.

Are 'energy drinks' bad for you? - The Boston Globe
Quote:
Caffeine can increase anxiety, panic, some stomach problems, and some cardiac arrhythmias. Although some data suggest that drinking coffee can be good for you, "we should not mistake coffee or caffeine as a health food," Griffiths said.
Never felt anything like that. So then I pulled it up on Wikipedia and read this.

Energy drink - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Quote:
Energy drink Caffeine (mg/fl oz) mg/L per serving (quantity)
Coffee, brewed 7-16 (varies) 230-580 (varies)135-180 mg (8 fl oz/237 mL/1 cup)
SoBe No Fear 9.75 3 25
Good to know coffee is worse for you.

So what does everyone else think about this?

I drink water. As paranoid as everybody is about what's good for you and what's not, I've never seen an article on how water may be killing us.

Coke Classic is my favorite energy drink. It's loaded with corn syrup, caffeine, and carbonation, but I don't give a damn.

I wouldnt load up on that crap every day. You will find you become dependent on it just to get back to feeling what you used to feel like before you drank it.

I don't drink energy drinks, why spend $3.00 on a drink that tastes like grass?

Actually, this SoBe tastes really good. Not like Red Bull.

Water is the best for you. If you are properly hydrated, IE you need to drink more than you probably think you do, that alone will help with your energy.

Yeah me too, I sometimes drink a Coca Cola during the day if I drag a bit and it's enough to get me back up. No need for all these over priced energy drinks that taste like liquid butt.

Exactly. I know several people that are "addicted" to these stupid things. If they dont get one, they drag for the rest of the day rather than training their bodies to start producing the energy they need again on their own.

I just wonder though, if you are eating at least semi properly, but your body isn't using the carbs and sugars to produce energy...where is it going? Fat maybe? If so, your going to end up needing more cans of energy to stay up while your bod continues to produce less. Might be wrong but kinda makes "since" to me.

Re: Energy Drinks. Are they bad?

best energy thing you can do is drink plenty of water, and do some daily exercise. It livened me right up. I used to drag on, and drink like 4-5 cans of Pepsi a day... now I might have a can once a week. It's more of a reward than "a drink". I go through about 1.5-2 gallons of water a day (Pur water filter.. is fantastic)

yeah, water poisoning, imagine her family's reaction to that ****. I'm not really worried about getting that (with ~2 gallons a day, 3 is typically max). I take a healthy restroom break every hour or two.

2-3 gallons is a **** ton of water! I'm impressed. I try to drink about 80oz a day give or take.

Yup, the alcohol replaces the water in the body. That's why no matter how much beer you drink, you're only technically going to get thirstier.

Re: Energy Drinks. Are they bad?

Alcohol is a diuretic. It'll pull water out of your bloodstream. That's why you piss like crazy when you're drinking (besides the increased volume of liquid that you're probably drinking) and wake up feeling dehydrated.

Re: Energy Drinks. Are they bad?

But seriously, 2-3 GALLONS....?

One should just use their kidneys as a meter. If you piss yellow, you need to drink more. If you piss clear your just right. If you piss out 100% Brita or PuR labeled water...it's overkill. I seriously doubt you really NEED THAT much. I try to drink about a gallon of just water, and then whatever I drink on top of that with meals. I probably take in about 2 gallons per day all said and done. Everyone's metablolism is different as well as kidney efficiency, but 3 gallons of JUST water is a bit overkill.

5-Hour Energy > * I use that stuff when I gotta climb outta bed in the middle of the night to work. Its great, and once it wears off, I just get tired, no nasty crash or anything like that.

shoot the whole bottle for 5 hours of energy, half the bottle for less, ect. its not the best tasting, but if you can shoot liquor, shooting this is like candy

uh.. a lot of things speed up your heart. unless you drink a bunch of energy drinks, coffee and pop a bunch of diet pills you should be fine.

Re: Energy Drinks. Are they bad?

It would take one heck of a lot of energy drinks to kill you the only time you have issues with energy drinks is when you mix them with drinks or in drinks and you have two signals going to your hears one telling it to speed up one telling it to slow down.

Re: Energy Drinks. Are they bad?

i used to drink coffee every single day, and redbull every afternoon. I gradually cut down, and on some days when i wouldn't drink any at all, i would get a caffeine headache. eventually i started drinking tea, and now, i'm at no extra caffeine at all, except for the ocassional iced coffee, and honestly, i have more energy now than i did with the coffee and red bull.

also my extra energy could be contributed by the fact that i go to the gym everyday now and i've lost a good amount of weight.
