Wow why didn't they do this earlier?

House moves on surging oil prices - Yahoo! News

Quote:
The House, eager to do something about record high gasoline prices in advance of the Memorial Day weekend, voted narrowly Wednesday to approve stiff penalties for those found guilty of gasoline price gouging. The bill directs the Federal Trade Commission and Justice Department to go after oil companies, traders or retail operators if they take "unfair advantage" or charge "unconscionably excessive" prices for gasoline and other fuels

i dunno, last time our govt started poking around and started questioning execs, prices dropped to almost 2.50/gal. maybe with constant pressure, they will drop and stay dropped, and maybe, the govt and execs will come to the conclusion if we want even less, we need more refineries, which in turn helps everyone, refineries = jobs = better economy.

Re: Wow why didn't they do this earlier?

price gouging only affects gas STATIONs no? not the companies causing the high gas prices?

IMO that whole debate is a waste of time and our tax dollars

yeah oil companies were mentioned but

in the past, gouging has been coined for independent gas stations charging more than they should

Re: Wow why didn't they do this earlier?

stations only are able to add a nickel or dime to their price nowadays. youll notice also the stations with a full store attached are around .05$ more than a stand-alone station with the center booth controller guy, that .05$ goes into helping the store part.

nowadays you couldnt gouge if you wanted to. people will drive 5 more minutes to get gas .05$ cheaper a gallon (using almost half a gallon of gas doing so, thusly offsetting their added trip for cheaper gas, which proves how stupid some people can be). more and more are the stations becoming part of larger companies/chains (Shell, Chevron, AMPM/Arco, Valero, Etc) to stay in business, and those companies set the price per gallon based on what others charge in that area and what the price of gas for them to buy is.

Re: Wow why didn't they do this earlier?

Some big company should lower their prices to 1.80/gallon for a while. Everyone would go there, nobody else would go to other stations, and eventually the other ones would have to lower as well. Too bad all the oil companys are greedy ****s

Re: Wow why didn't they do this earlier?

I think what will happen, is untill this whole thing goes into effect, they're going to raise prices like there no tomorrow, then they are going to lower them to what they are now......

Actually, a little proof to back my theory. They've already said gas should hit 4 bucks a gallon this year right?
