Question for you gun enthusiasts..

I'm thinking about getting a pistol eventually, and I can't decide on any at the moment. I like the Beretta 92FS because it fits really nice in my hand, along with the P-99. I'm really just looking for something that shoots accurately and is good for people with large hands. I've shot many glocks before and I really have to say I can't stand them.

Re: Question for you gun enthusiasts..

This is going to be an interesting thread to watch as I too am in the process of picking out a hand gun and see about getting my ccw permit as well.

I am leaning towards a glock something or other...I want it to be at least a .40, but am really thinking about a .44 mag of some sort.

Glocks makes a nice .45. The only bad thing I found with mine is they only have a trigger safety no button, so basically they have no safety and I have a 14 year old son in the house so I have to keep it locked up in the safe all the time which makes it harder to get to if something were to happen

Mine would be more for when driving than at home. For home protection, I have access to several 12 guage shotguns and 00 buck shot and 1 oz deer slugs.

Which would you say is better...the .44 or the .45?

Re: Question for you gun enthusiasts..

I dont think they make Glocks in .44 models just .45 auto and .45 G.A.P. so I would say a .45 auto in the compact series ie. G21

Looking at their site, they don't make .44s, it was more of a general question. I have heard that .44's are much better than .45's...but am not sure really.

the sigs are very nice, glocks are nice too, but hit or miss with size fitment, are you wanting this for concealed carry or just to have one?

This is mostly just to have and home security. I wish it was for concealed.... I'd feel much safer everywhere I went.

Re: Question for you gun enthusiasts..

Glocks have always felt cheap to me when holding/shooting one. I'll give them one thing, it's hard to beat the ease of breaking down a glock for cleaning/jams.

I love 1911's if you are looking for something practical to carry/use for defense. A .45 1911 with +P+ ammo is going to be hard to beat for protection purposes.

If you are just wanting something to shoot, honestly I'd go with a 9mm simply for the fact ammo is cheaper and easier to come by.

I'm still shopping for a pistol that fits my hand right, my roommate's beretta comes close, but still not exactly what I'm looking for.

Re: Question for you gun enthusiasts..

I'm about 6'2 and my hands are pretty large, the 92F Berettas just fit me pretty nicely.

I'll try out the sigs, I was pretty happy with them the last time I remember shooting them at the local range.

I've shot a USP before too, excellent weapons.

Re: Question for you gun enthusiasts..

If interested in either a .45 cal and/or 1911 style;

Take a look at the Taurus new 1911...PT-1911 I think it is. Dad bought one for Christmas and I was quite impressed with the quality and the list of standard "options" considering the price.

At Christmas, the Stainless model was sold out thru spring our gun rep said.

Re: Question for you gun enthusiasts..

One of the best pistols I've shot is the HK 10mm. It's easy to control after the first shot and is very accurate. I own a Ruger P89, and it doesn't come close to the HK (but it was a lot cheaper). HK makes good weapons.

Herbstang,
I carry the Para 1911 SSP. It's an amazing firearm and a huge value for the money. Next is the Commander length in stainless!

I believe that the 44's have more knock down power, which is usually what people are after when they go 45 these days, considering that 40 is a much better weapon. but most 44's I see are revolvers.

I like my 9 glock, its a great weapon for the money, but im still getting used to the safetyless hammer....

my buddy has an HK 40, I haven't shot it yet, but he swears by it and I know he's right, it does however cost twice as much.

Re: Question for you gun enthusiasts..

I carry a Smith and Wesson SW9VE in 9mm I love it and got a deal on it from Bass Pro,last one they had. Now I would reconmend that you stay away from a .44 Mag for your first gun cause it will night blind you. A .40, .357, or a 9mm will be fine number one lots of police carry them so ammo shortages shouldnt be a issue, a wide assortment of loads, and all a great for first time shooters and pro alike due to the recoil not being hard to control. I am looking for a light to mount on mine for low light or night time conditions other than that its set with sixteen in the clip and one in the pipe plus the two spare clips, I bought one more, I will do fine.

Re: Question for you gun enthusiasts..

Do yourself a favor and check out the Smith and Wesson M&P.

really is a great feeling pistol, very accurate for a service type pistol, has the changable backstraps for different sized hands and has the 1911 grip angle.

Funny how everyone is copping either Glock or Colt nowadays,of course I cant say much my S&W is a Glock clone but at a much better price for what you get.

Re: Question for you gun enthusiasts..

the M&P has some similar features to the glock but there are some definite improvements. You can shoot lead ammo with it, it has a fully supported chamber, it has a full length internal steel frame that is molded into the polymer frame.

The ergonomics on the M&P are way better then the glocks IMO. And the price is very competitive

Re: Question for you gun enthusiasts..

I have the Beretta Cougar .40 S&W

I ended up with this because it fit in my hand very well. It is nice and accurate, little recoil, adn 10 rounds of stopping power.

I have fired a H&K USP .40. I like it, but the grip was squared, so not as comfortable in the hand. Nice pistol though. However expensive usually.

One of my next purchases will be a 1911 though. M1911 probably. However hopefully very soon my next purchase, which will be one of my first purchases with my FFL 03 when the ATF approves it, is a Czech CZ-52.

I will be able to get those cheap and shipped right to my door. Plus I like the size of them, looks much lighter and smaller then my Beretta for a CCW. And it holds 8 rounds of 7.62 x 25 mm,
