+1 Very good adice.
Camera companies are kinda like car companies sometimes: Canon/Nikon, Ford/Chevy, Alabama/Auburn etc
I use Canon equipment but Nikon makes top notch stuff too. Something like the Powershot A630 is a very nice camera. Last year's models are still around in stores like Office Depot and Best Buy sometimes for a steal. My brother just bought an A625 (I think that is the model) for $199. Very light weight and compact and takes very nice pics printable up to 8x10 easy.
Canon's Digic II software is very good too.
In 4 years now, I have only had one issue with my old A80 and that was my fault and easily fixed at home.
On a separate note; couple things to buy with the camera: rechargable batteries-the little color displays EAT batteries. Rechargables will pay for themselves. If your computer doesn't have a card reader, get one of those too. Just the USB plug in type is better than using your camera's batteries all the time to upload pics.
Sorry for the long reply. Happy shopping!
