I wish you lived closer, I'd love to see if I could tell the difference between the 1080p and 720p on a 42" TV.

Re: Thinking about buying a LCD TV

I know you already got the TV but I'm gonna' give my input anyway.

If it's plasma top of the line is Pioneer and Pioneer is coming out with their newer elite line and such. Blacks are deeper and colors are (going to be) more rich. Then Panasonic is your next bet and finally Hitachi.

With LCD's Samsung basically makes all parts for their TVs so they're considered the best. Then Sony which uses their own and some of Samsung's. Then Sharp which uses their own, Sony's and Samsung's parts. The other brands basically use a combination of these three and whatever else they get/make.

Finally get th PS3. The BluRay in it is the fastest BluRay out there. You can drop a grand on a new BluRay player or spend 600 on the PS3 and get a whole lot better. As for the upconvert player, they are really useless. They just take the regular DVD and put it into a format it can't really go in. The picture is slightly better (I think it goes into 720i) but it's no real "whoop".

As for going with a 1080 or 720 I wouldn't worry too much. I believe in the USA we still only have at highest 720i, maybe 720p. 1080 is a good investment, but just that, an investment.

I'm looking forward to this: Amazon.com: Planet Earth - The Complete BBC Series [Blu-ray]: DVD: David Attenborough

Should be here Monday.

Here's my proof of purchase:

I guess I should invest in a digital camera next. Now where's my free Winnie The Pooh crazy straw?

Because I live in an apartment, and I don't think they'd be too crazy about huge holes in their wall.

From what I've read so far, it looks like either Sharp, Sony or Samsung are pretty much the way to go. Depending on what I can get a discount on through work though, I may consider different brands. If I'm not mistaken, they have pretty good discounts on Panasonic.

I'm looking for something at least 42" plus (the bigger, the better) and would like to spend around $2,000 or less.
Consider this: Will you or anyone be watching the LCD or Plasma HDTV at an angle or straight on. If at an angle Plasma will give you better image than LCD. Watching straight on it will be your personal preference.
If you are in a bright room LCD is better because of less glare compared to plasma. Plasma TV's weigh alot more and are much more heavy than the lighter LCD TV's. The LCD tv's drain less energy than the plasma. Generally LCD's don't have as good black color tone as Plasmas and for catching sports action in motion LCD's lack but LCD's are improving in fact they have improved quite a bit now. In LCD you have more choices from 22 inch to 60 inch screens. Before the LCD Tv's lasted longer but now plasmas and LCD are quite the same.
Generally the plasma gives the better pic at all angles.
Personally if I were to go with a LCD it would be SONY.
If Plasma I like Pioneer.

Hope this helps.

Relax... I would say its a good thread to bring back - but it'd be better to just start a new one - technology has improved a TON and prices have dropped at the same time..

lol nah eventually they go back so many pages you never see them again unless you search and reply to an old thread.

i actually think after 6mo with no replies all threads should be locked, and if a reply is submitted after 6mo, it must be approved by mod to resurface.

Yes true I agree with you and prices on these HDTV's have come down in price as you can get more now for your $$$.

I'm sure this question will come up again as we near the February 2009 deadline for analog transmissions.
