Thinking about buying a LCD TV

Anyone have any recommendations for good brands or brands to stay away from?

From what I've read so far, it looks like either Sharp, Sony or Samsung are pretty much the way to go. Depending on what I can get a discount on through work though, I may consider different brands. If I'm not mistaken, they have pretty good discounts on Panasonic.

I'm looking for something at least 42" plus (the bigger, the better) and would like to spend around $2,000 or less.

I'm a big fan of Samsung LCD's. Whatever it is make sure its 1080p. I have heard good things about Panasonic as well though.

Re: Thinking about buying a LCD TV

I have heard that Mitsubishi's are the only current TV's that can play both HD and Bluetoothe, but I don't really know alot about that kind of stuff.

Re: Thinking about buying a LCD TV

Any HDTV can play any HD video. The only difference is the resolution that they can play it at. More than likely Mitsubishi has a player inside their TV that can play both.

Re: Thinking about buying a LCD TV

I talked with a guy who sold TV's all his life, LCD, Plasma, projection, even did installs. After looking over the options, my folks ended up getting a 42" LCD Panasonic. Great picture, great size, GREAT price.

Re: Thinking about buying a LCD TV

Mine is a 36" polaroid LCD

has a great picture, not the most resolution but it looks good at it's size. A bigger TV would be cool but my tv room isn't huge

Re: Thinking about buying a LCD TV

best one, honestly, though is a DLP b/c it uses a bulb and thousands of mirrors where as plasma uses a gas, and lcd uses pixels to produce a picture. when a plasma fails, you typically cant fix it, the pixels just burn up after a while in a lcd, but a dlp, if it fails, usually its just the one bulb in the back. replace that and youre fine. they also last the longest too.

my gf's dad has a akai dlp and that ***** is badass

Re: Thinking about buying a LCD TV

I've got a 50" LCD projection tv and a 42" plasma tv. The 50" is a Sony that does 1080i and the plasma is a Samsung and it does 720p. They both make awesome pictures. The 1080p panel TVs are still pretty expensive. I guess if you can afford it, why not go ahead and get it...but I don't really think it's worth the premium at this point.

Re: Thinking about buying a LCD TV

if you've got LOTS of money to spend, get a Pioneer. the picture is absolutely gorgeous. otherwise, my vote goes to samsung

btw, samsung plasma can be had for less $ than lcd, and the picture is still exceptional, so you might consider that.. just take into account the aspects of the room the tv will be in... if lighting isn't an issue, i'd go with plasma over lcd

Re: Thinking about buying a LCD TV

I've looked into the differences in Plasma, LCD and DLP and decided that LCD is what I want to go with. I just need to decide on a brand and model.

They also weigh as much as an 03 Cobra. I don't want to have to move it again here in the near future.

Then why did you say you were set on that Pansonic rear projection?

Because it only weighs as much as an 05+ GT. Actually because I misread what you were saying, but that's confidential.

Re: Thinking about buying a LCD TV

Well, I decided to go with plasma after all and get this one:

Panasonic TH 42PZ700U - 42" plasma TV Reviews. Flat-panel and Plasma TVs Reviews by CNET.

Main reason being that I decided a 42" is the size I wanted and it has the best picture quality of any TV its size. I also got it for 40% off regular price with free "White Glove" shipping, so that didn't hurt. It should be here sometime next week.

Now I've just got to decide if I want a PS3 or just buy an upconverting DVD player. I'll probably go with the PS3 though unless anyone can give me some great and wonderful reason not to (and it better involve ogres).

Re: Thinking about buying a LCD TV

Ogres were initally contracted to do the work on the PS3 prototypes. This is why the release date for the new console continued to be pushed further and further back. Eventually, racially centered jokes/remarks began to circulate through the ogre's company emails causing them to go on strike. Finally, Sony illegally fired all production ogres, but only after they had the time to imbed a "pop-up ogre" program in each and every PS3. The "pop-up" ogre is, in effect, an EMP emitting goober fish that has cost dozens of dollars worth of damage to about 2 and one half homes Vermont wide.

A buddy of mine just bought a Vizio 37" LCD tv; they make a really good tv for probably the cheapest price on the market...i know they make a 42" LCD and i think they might even make a 50" or so too...

Are they 720p or 1080p, though? Most of the cheaper LCD/plasma TV's are 720p (like mine).
