First time I've ever seen a major forum like that bite the dust.

Well, in their defense, they only have 87,184 members, 479,167 threads, and 5,509,211 posts...

yup quite the large forum... takes some serious server and database work to keep up with all that.

Re: [H]ard|Forum bites the dust:

The vBulletin search is what kills the server, which is why it is fine without it enabled. When you search for something on a site as large as HardOCP, vBulltin scans the entire post table, which has 5.5 million rows in it. Then it pulls out the most relevant posts for what you searched for.

It's enough to bring the most ridiculous servers to their knees and once we hit 1 Million posts here, unless vBulletin comes up with a solution before it happens, we will either have to 1) disable searching 2) use an alternative search 3) add another server.

It's not cheap to run a large vBulletin forum. I think HardOcp has something like 3 database servers.
